Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
Well with the election being over gay marriages was certainly a big issue and still is. I dont know if this topic was posted already im sorry if it was. One thing i would like to point out before i rant or speak my mind is that I am not a homophobe, i have no problem with gay people what so ever. However i do have a problem with gay marriages for a couple of reasons. 1) Marriage has always invovled the church and God. I know God loves everyone and doesnt hate anybody but i object to gay marriages taking place in a church or involving a bible. 2) I believe some of the gay marriages taking place is just to gain benifits married people have and thats all they want are the benifits and they do not care about how holy marriage is (i know i could be wrong). I have no problem with civil unions to gain those benefits but i do have a problem with marriage. I know my opinion might be wrong to some of you and im sorry if i offended anybody but im just stating my opinion and well i wanted to see what your thoughts were.

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
As I can see, there have been two other threads about this, one was brought up by La_LovelyLady at the end of May http://forums.webrats.com/showthread.php?t=6658, and the other by steadydiet at the end of August http://forums.webrats.com/showthread.php?t=16625. That was a while ago though, so some opinions may have changed or whatever and might be worth talking about again.
Your first point is simply not true. I personally believe that it should be, but the fact that it isn't is not going to change. Men and women have been marrying outside of the church (meaning marrying purely through the state) for many years now.
Your second point, yes some homosexual marriages may be purely for the benifits, but many hetrosexual marriages are for just that as well. You cannot ban someone a fundamental right because you believe they don't have reason to want/need it (insert random tangent against non-shall issue CCW licenses here).
I know I used to believe we could do a civil union with all the benifits system, but that reminds me of separate but equal. *laughs to myself* I think I'm starting to wonder if this is our generation's segregation.

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
Marriages are performed in a variety of ways... not just "the Church". There isn't just one church, there are many religions, with churches for sects even inside the religions. I'm Christian, but I believe that I'm supposed to love everyone equally. Everyone sins, and everyone points out everyone else's sins, without first looking at themselves. As far as Gay marriage.... Christians are taught that God loves everyone, even sinners. Otherwise we'd all be condemned.
Personally, I think other peoples' relationships aren't anyone else's business. It's the people involved in the relationship.

I'm assuming you're against this because it's considered a sin. If so what about virgins, in some denominations it's a sin to have sex before you're married, should we ban them as well? What about liars, they're sinners too and probably will lie here and there throughout their lives, are they banned too? So that stuff's not that serious to a lot of people. What about murder, that's considered a sin and pretty serious in my book, lets go ahead and ban all murderers from marriage, I'd hate for all that sin to be in a church.
I'm straight and have several gay friends and to say that they can't get married because it's a sin is like saying I get to get married because i've never sinned and will never sin again.
There are several arguments against gay marriage but to say it's wrong because it's a sin is just plain stupid and hypocritical

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
G-Curl...you have it all wrong there. He's talking about how it's a sin for two people of the same sex to be married. NOT that sinners should not get married. In my state fornication is banned (although not enforced) and is classified as a class 4 misdemeanor. That is banned because it's considered a sin.
For you to even think that this is about banning people that have sinned shows your ignorance about the church. You would know that everyone of us are sinners but that we are forgiven our sins.

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
That doesn't take away from the fact that this country is supposed to leave religion out of politics, therefore, a gay civil union should be acceptable.

Now I never said that, did I Jimi? I was just explaining to G-Curl that he read the whole thing wrong. What was hard to understand about that?

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
On the gay marriage in church deal:
Churches, as private institutions, may refuse to perform marriage services for anyone they see fit (homosexuals, non-virgins, non-members, etc.). However, this is a secular nation (or at least I think it is). The doctrine of separation of church and state (which actually isn't in the Constitution but was something the Supreme Court came up with) dictates the moral principles of one religion cannot (or should not) dictate the moral principles of society. True, there is overlap (i.e. thou shalt not kill), but these overlapping principles stem not from a religious text, but from the Constitution as written (and from standard social requirements).
So, from a constitutional standpoint, does gay marriage deprive anyone of life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness? No, I believe it does not. A Christian may find it offensive, but then again, some may find the fact that I don't profess a belief in God to be just as offensive. Does gay marriage fail to adhere to Bill of Rights, or any constitutional amendment? Currently, it does not.
Why should we amend the constitution to put Christian morality into the government? I fail to see the logic.

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
I was simply replying to the statement saying gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry because it's a sacrament involving God and the church (redundant I know). Many people say it shouldn't be allowed because it's a sin to do so yet we're all sinners. I was making the assumption that the statement i quoted was saying that since marriage involves God and church and that homosexuality can be viewed as a sin then it shouldn't be allowed. If I was wrong in my assumption I apologize. I was stating that sinners get married all the time and that we exclude homosexuals as if their sin is so much greater than others.
I grew up Catholic and understand the idea of being forgiven for your sins. People get forgiven for their sins, why can't homosexuals receive forgiveness. I know I know it's because they continue to sin. Though we are forgiven at certain times (i.e. confessional) we still continue to sin. If we confess that we sinned, were forgiven, and then sinned again are we really forgiven?
Could someone find a scripture that states that it's a sin for homosexuals to marry as opposed to the scriptures that just state homosexuality is a sin? (i'm not saying there isn't one, i'm sure there is, i'd just like to see it)
(try not to get too riled up about this anyone, just a friendly debate, not trying to offend anyone)

However, does not allowing gay marriage defy the constitution in life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness? Yes.

Re: Gay Marriages (your thoughts)
why does everyone put this on christianity, i can't think of any religion that says its okay to be gay
and i thought that the idea of separation of church and state was meant to keep a state sanctioned church from being instituted, but not to keep religious beliefs out of government, and if someone thinks that you can actually separate church and state you are dreaming, religion, or lack there of makes up a BIG part of who you are, how you see things, how you will decide things, so to say you are supposed to keep it separated is a high school fantasy that doesn't happen, and the only time people say religion shouldn't have a part in politics is because a religion doesn't agree with something they are doing
and i still am waiting to hear a good arguement as to why being homosexual should be accepted
