building a comp need suggestions...
I'm thinking about building my own computer and don't really know where to start. All I know is that I want it to be AMD based.

Re: building a comp need suggestions...
Check out www.newegg.com, they have great customer service and are really cheap on their prices. Pricewatch.com and Zipzoomfly.com are all great as well.
This is a great little system. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...-150-017&DEPA=1
Its got your power supply, case and mother board. Add a AMD 2700 xp processor, 512mb ddr 3200 ram and a harddrive and your good to go. Its got one pci slot for a nice sound card and one agp slot for a nice video card. Its got 6 usb 2.0 ports and 3 firewire ports. You can use the onboard sound and video if you like and always upgrade later. Plus lan cubes are the shit right now. Light, small, easy to transport.

Heck yeah, I bought my current machine through a deal I saw there. I got Dual 20" LCD's and Dimension 8400 with a couple upgrades for $1800. It's freakin gorgeous. Definitely should consider it.

Re: building a comp need suggestions...
I'm definetly not considering a Dell and my budget is around $800 to $950. I do know that I want a AMD 64 3000+ processor and The main thing I want it to do is run Half Life 2 and the new Counter-Strike smoothly. Oh, and i don't need a monitor I already have one.

Good luck man. My friend's comp is pretty gosu and his comp exploded trying to run half life 2. He built it with about $1000 worth of parts. Source runs fine although the environments turn a little iffy at some times.

Dont believe what he said. Buy the right parts and it would be easy to build a sub $1000 computer that would run HL2 and CS:S with good frame rates and good IQ.
The A64 3000+(socket 939) is a great start, get a good mobo like the ASUS A8V, some value pc3200(DDR400) ram, and a 6600GT for AGP and you would have a great comp to run your games on.

Re: building a comp need suggestions...
i have a 9800pro on my shuttle and it runs really slow on half life 2 (30 fps). i recommend saving for at least a 6800 or a x800. PCI-express would be good. I wouldnt buy a AGP 6800 or a x800 because you cant transfer it to newer computers with PCI-x later.

Re: building a comp need suggestions...
I have a X600 pro PCI-X being put into the computer that I'm having built. I have been doing some research on systems, CPUs and GPUs and what kind of frame rates they are generating and I think my comp will run it very well.
