Firewalls
Guys I need some help here. I have a friend that just hooked up to cable. Does she need a firewall? If she does it needs to be cheap or free and very simple to set up/use. Can any of you give me a little advice? I'm not a computer guru like some of you so please be specific. Thanks in advance. bt.

Re: Firewalls
What version of Windows? If she is using Windows XP, the firewall included in Service Pack 2 should be fine.

Re: Firewalls
If you have a old spare computer (486 or pentium) that has a floppy and you can find 2 nics for it you can make a very good hardware firewall out of it. Check out this site: freesco

Re: Firewalls
winXP with service pack 2 is all you really need... shit like zone alarm just uselessly eats up system resources... it's highly unlikely that a hacker is even going to bother trying to get into your system anyways... just don't get any viruses or download spyware and you'll be fine

Re: Firewalls
Seapirate has a good idea with the seperate box as the firewall, but it sounds like this may be out of the league for someone who is not a tech guru to setup.
Zone Alarm is pretty decent if you want something just to make your friend feel safe, but they may see alot of hit's from scans that will bother them?
A cheap solution could be to also use a router that uses NAT right off of the cable modem. Again not for the technically challenged, but pretty cheap =)

Re: Firewalls
dont use zone alarm, mcaffe, norton...all that crap slows down your computer, use the firewall that's built in to windows xp, it works great

Re: Firewalls
All computer systems should have a firewall of some kind. There are to many evils LURKING on the internet that want to hurt your system. Find out from your cable provider if their package includes a firewall. If not, and your OS is WinXP, use the one provided with the OS. If you have an older Win OS you may, at your own risk, down load from their respective web sites, one of the following free version of their fire walls. Sygate Firewall, OutPost Firewall or Tiny Firewall. They are fairly easy to set up. Good luck.
