Re: AMD or Intel?

+1 AMD is the way to go. Celeron is much cheaper but depending on how much you push your pc you'll be thankful you spent the money on amd.

Re: AMD or Intel?

I think I am going to go with the AMD but is AMD Intel compatible? Or is there anything that I wouldn't be able to with the AMD that I could with the Intel?

Re: AMD or Intel?

do you mean Windows compatible b/c if you mean that AMD is Windows compatible then yes....Intel and AMD do the same thing and all they are are basically different brands...personally i use AMD b/c it is easier to tweak and costs less to build with.

Re: AMD or Intel?

I thought they were the same. I don't know why but it says, in my class details or what ever you want call it, that the computer has to be Intel compatible. I guess if they do the same thing then it doesn't matter what use, right.

Re: AMD or Intel?

amd = better for games (esp athlon64)
general desktop stuff it's fine (documents, internet music etc) all your normal stuff.

intel = faster at ripping/compressing audio and video. so if u're a movie maker or musician go this. but still fine for general stuff. (history has been that intel we're always slightly more stable over amd...much of a muchness these days... but stability will be based on a good mainboard)

everything (consumer based) is x86 compatable so really intel or amd, same thing in terms of will it run, or is it compatable.

buy in this order depending on your budget athlon64, pentium4, athlonXP, celeron (whatever u do don't get a celeron).

motherboard (important): athlon64/xp get an nforce or kt (nforce4, nforce2, kt800) chipset
intel/get an intel chipset (925, 915, 875, 865).
And get a well known brand (intel, abit, gigabyte, msi, asus etc etc)
don't touch sis or ali chipsets on mainboards.

that's my 2cents worth.

Re: AMD or Intel?

I used to be an Intel person myself. Then my friends and co-workers, were telling me why AMD is so much better. I first looked at AMD, and was like, what are they talking about.

First thing. AMD has caught up with the market, and by many ways, has surpassed Intel. AMD Athlon 64 is the way to go, when making a new choice. If you look at an Intel chip, say like the P4 530, or 3.0Ghz. It is rated what it runs. 3.0 Intel chips say they have a 800Mhz, FSB, but the true FSB is still around 200, because, they have 4 pipelines, of this, they technically run 800 FSB (Front side bus). When looking at say the AMD Athlon 64 3000+, It runs at 1.8Ghz, but there is a major difference. The reason that they call it a 3000 is because, they technically run the same as a P4 3.0Ghz. The Athlon 64 say they have a 1600 Mhz FSB. The same thing holds true for the Athlon as the Intel. 200X8 pipelines.

The reason they rate the 3000 as a 3.0, even though it is a lower speed, is because the run a fast clock per cycle, than the Intel chips. This means while Intel is on the first pass back, AMD is already on their second pass back.

So pretty much it is all up to you. AMD Athlon 64 is my vote. Just think of this while you are choosing. Why is Microsoft, beta testing on the Athlon 64. Also, why do I have so many employees of Microsoft, coming into my store to get Athlon 64 systems.

You will still have those people who will stick with either AMD or Intel. It is your choice. It really doesn't matter.

Re: AMD or Intel?

It sounds like you just want a value PC. Both are great processors. Since you seem to be looking for value, I would go with AMD, if you are building a PC.... Or else, I would just pick up a cheap Dell. If its just for school, any will do

They are both very good Procs. I picked AMD soley because it is cheaper.
