Are you American?
Well, this is something i've always been contraversial about and being in my location it's something i hear all the time. I was standing in line today at Home Depot and 3 mexican guys are standing behind me speaking spanish, well this guy infront of me keeps on turning around and shaking his head...then he looks at me and says, "you would think that if they come to this country they could atleast speak our language". Well, i kinda got pissed about this and thought i would speak my mind like i always do :happycow:
I just looked back and asked him how much spanish he knew? He looked back at me kinda puzzled and said, "why in the heck would i want to know spanish". I said "well you ever think they might say the same thing about english, or maybe they know english and just would rather speak there own language. If you went to another country with your buddies, would you still use english talking to them?" He replied, "yeah i guess, what are you mexican or something?" I said, "no, im just someone that uses logical thinking, and has an open mind." and smiled. Its just dumbass comments like this guy and other prejudice assholes make that piss me off.
One of the most used satements around here that really piss me off, is when someone says...they should either learn english or go back where they came from. Or when someone says, well they should all go back to where they came from, we would be alot better off. If thats the case then anyone who isn't 100% Native American needs to get the hell outta this country. Everybody that crosses our national borders has just as much right to be here as we that were born here do. Our ancestors were immigrants just as they were, and i think singling them out and making these statements is pure stupidity. Anyone thats in this country legally i think has just as much right to say there American as anyone else, this country is the land of opportunity and many of these people have MUCH better lives here.
I kinda wish i had learned spanish in highschool, as im now thinking about learning it as more and more Mexican and Spanish people start living in Georgia. Plus i wouldn't mind going to Mexico, and knowing the language would help alot.
So what's everyone else's opinion on this subject?

Re: Are you American?
I'd just like to add that the EU is making a push to make all citizens of the EU speak the chosen languages of whatever country they might reside in.
We haven't gone that far, but I understand what that guy was talking about

Re: Are you American?
yes but in the same thinking as above i wouldn't go to another country without learning the language, i do not understand the thinking of someone that wants to come to america and doesn't want to learn the language to make things easier on theirselves and the residents here, but it is really difficult when people come into work and they hand me a phone to speak to someone that can speak english because they can't

Re: Are you American?
i guess as an usa citizen born in mexico, i know on this one what is all about... not is not the hokey pokey...
1. America is a continent, not a country....
2. there is no spanish people, there is mexicans, salvadorians, argentins, etc. , etc, etc, spanish is a language not a nationality
3. there is a learning curve regarding hispanic/latino immigrants, the longer they are in the country, the most chances they speak english, other consideration is the kids of those immigrants... i have 3 kids and 3 grandsons... all of my grandsons speak fluent english and very bad spanish....
4.As a personal and professional opinion, i think it shows very bad education to speak a language in front of somebody that does not understand it... i speak english with my husband outside in front of people that do not speak spanish... and i speak spanish at home...
5. he is parcially right but not in the way he presented it... as a norm a person that speaks 2 languages earns more money than someone that speaks only one... even bush speaks some spanish.. so it would not hurt them ... au countraire (speak french too, lol) it would help them advance in this society
6. quoting darwin... adaptation is part of evolution.... you adpat you survive.. plain and simple... ask succesful spanish and you see the norm... they probably speak english as bussines and spanish at home...
need to sleep... i'm tired

Re: Are you American?
Juana, America being referred to as a country is usually when U.S. citizens short coin North America which is a country. And yes...our continents is known as the America's. Just thought i would clear up what i said earlier :happycow:
I understand that knowing english is needed to be successful in our country because it is the most common and widely spoken language. I posted this thread to cover the prejudice statements, which clearly the man i encountered was using it as, you just would have had to be there to understand his attitude towards it. I just don't think we should be putting other people down for not speaking a certain language in a public non-business matter, when we ourselves do not even have a national language yet.

Re: Are you American?
lol... i agree with you about how rude that person was making those comments... i heard those before personally...
lol again.. North America is not a country,.... all of canada is more north than USA... even portions of Mexico are more to the north than some parts in TX and FL... american refering to usa is just a way we name this country... that is another topic... like calling futbol ... soccer (go figure...)
and yes , you are absolutely right about all of the prejudices regarding hispanic immigrants... i been asked about if i get free healthcare... well I pay 200 dlls/month for that, that if we get welfare/medicaid/ etc ... never done it... NEVER will... if we pay taxes... well if some people would pay as much as me... the deficit would not be that bad...
prejudices just shows a lack of undertanding and knowledge about a matter... excellent post.. wait for juancamaney to see it... he will enjoy it..
Juana!

WTF man. If you move to Mexico I'm sure they would all learn English so that they could communicate better with you and your employeer would make sure that all books and work related materials are translated to Englsih at their expense.
Face as a society we bend over backwards to accomadate immagrants. People know this so don't be suprised if they expect something in return.

Re: Are you American?
There is no national language in the United States.
Anyone who thinks "they" should learn english if they want to live here should be dropped off in the middle of East LA, Little Italy, China Town, or better yet, Glendale where we all speak Armenian and see how much help they can get. I can speak enough in several languages to get me laid, arrested, and helped (not in that particular order).
In Mexico, we have an official language, Spanish, and a secondary language, English. So wherever you go that is a place of tourism there are signs in english. We have also had a recent influx of people from Asia, and the Middle East. So now, you can go to Mexico, to a Chinese restaurant, order from a guy named Habib in English
Intolerant people are the worst kind because they think they are superior when all they are is ignorant.
Dank U.

Re: Are you American?
We only have one official language here so our immigrants are forced to learn Dutch, they can't get a job if they don't speak it. Nearly all of the immigrants speak Dutch except for some wifes/mothers whose husband works probably. Some of them speak Arabic when they're together wich is not too much of a problem, most of the time they start speaking Dutch when there's a Dutch guy with them anyway.
Geen dank.

Re: Are you American?
I have mixed feelings over the ACLU. In one case, they will defend your right to speak your language wherever you please, and in another case, they will defend a group of Nazi's who want to parade down South Harlem.
I really don't care if they did make english the official language. If you forced foreigners to speak it, they could move up the business ladder quicker. Plus since Spanish is the second most spoken language, they'd probably make it the secondary language then all of you would be forced to learn spanish in public schools. WIN WIN!
Either way, I'm set.

Re: Are you American?
You analysis is probably on par Juan. If we did have an "official nation language" it would be English and Spanish as second.
