well i have a pc built by gateway.....
heres my problem :
i go and turn on my pc and a screen comes on saying that i turned of the pc incorrectly the last time it was in use.....then it gave me a few options ...
well then it goes to the windows loading screen ( the one that has windoes xp on top and in the middle abar going from left to right)
well after a few seconds it goes black .... lights on keyboard go out and also with the mouse ..... and it stays like that till i disconnect it....
what can it be??
i kept on turning it on and using those options it gave me on the first screen but nothing has worked.... my main concern is that i don't want to loose my files in my hard drive ( lots od family photos)
is there anything i can do ??

hit f8 right before it says loading xp

put it in safe mode and post where it hangs

is that when a whole page runs down the screen then stops???

Try reinstalling Windows. That should overwrite the corrupted file.

say i reinstall windows..... would i loose my files in my hard drive??

Only if you format first. Reinstalling windows will overwrite the windows files. All other files will stay, but you'll need to setup programs in your start menu as it should revert back to default. Also, for safety's sake, if you have a second hard drive, you can boot to dos with a boot disk, and copy any files you don't want to lose first. Better safe than sorry;.

my suggestion is to find another computer, take out your hard drive and put it in the other computer as a slave... then run scandisk and some other disktools to make sure the integrity is good.

if scandisk finds problems, fix them and try booting off of that drive again. if you still have no luck, put the bad drive back into the second computer and copy files from it onto the hard drive of the good computer.

agp440.sys is a file I've never heard of before... but agp could be 'accelerated graphics port' and '440' could be the model of a video card (mx440 is a very commonly used video card). Regardless, this type of error shouldn't just come up from nowhere unless there's a drive error or something.

i think that driver refers commonly to a hardware problem... try this...

1. disconnect mouse.... restart computer... if works replace mouse dirvers (replace) if not ... conect again

2. disconect keyboard... restart... if works replace keyboard drivers (update).. if not ... conect back

3. disconnect video card... restart... if works.. replace video card drivers (update) if not...

a. boot it with the "windows reinstalltion cd",
b. run it in recovery mode (choose option R in the windows recovery console)
c. and run "chkdsk /r"
d. Type "exit" and restarted Windows normally.

avoid disconecting the hd if possible,... windows would not be able to recognize it againg as an OS and then you would finish having to re-instal again and probably loosing files..

out of curiosity do you have an usb mouse?
