when does life begins? ....
for you, when a human being is formed? if you believe in God, when does a human is given a sould?
I was raised Catholic, so they teach us that life begins at conception... when do you think all of this starts?

Re: when does life begins? ....
Historically and universally, MOST cultures have agreed that "life begins" (meaning, abortion is morally wrong) after the quickening (when mom feels the baby kick). I tend to agree with this because I do believe in the presence of a soul before birth, but I'm not going to go so far as to say it gets there right at conception. Fertilized eggs leave women's bodies all the time without them even knowing they were there. That "God" would allow something with a soul to wind up stuck in a pad or tampon (or sea sponge if you're cool) for all eternity is a strange concept to me. Then again, the entire question is sort of a strange question. The only reason people bring it up is in reference to or preparation for an abortion debate. And for me, the abortion debate is a simple question of which life is more important - the baby's or the mother's? Since most of the people who kill themselves making sure those babies come out of the mother's body in perfect health are the same ones who refuse to fork over a cent of their paycheck to help the resulting child keep food in his/her belly, at this point I'm putting more value on the mother's life.

Re: when does life begins? ....
I don't believe in a soul so I would say that life begins when that baby is born and the cord it cut.
Hence the reason why we don't celebrate our birthdays on the day we were conceived or on the day the mother felt the first kick.

Conception.
Or, until the female realizes she is with-child.

Re: when does life begins? ....
I believe in life at conception. Think about it, a 7 month fetus that must be delivered prematurely for emergency reasons can live a healthy life, right? It is just breathing air 2 months earlier is all. I am sure I am not the first to think of this, but since everyone has a birthday celebration, why not honor your conception day? Easy to figure out, add 3 months to your birthday! If you have other evidence of your conception, do a little research. or math. My sister was conceived on Christmas Day, and born in mid September, not Sept. 25. So her conception day is Christmas, not December 16.

Re: when does life begins? ....
I'll play devils advocate here. Many people believe that life starts when you can actually remember something. Those of you that have read "A modest proposal" have heard of this theory. It was basically proven wrong, however, because hardly anyone can justify killing a 2 year old baby, while that same person could justify killing an unborn baby 5 months from birth.
I don't think anyone will ever truly decide an exact time, because it is a slippery slope. I mean, say the baby kicks one day. Does that mean that the day before that, the baby wasn't really a person yet? You can use that same logic to refuse most theories regarding this subject.
For the record, I'm keeping my personal beliefs out of this conversation on purpose. The comments I'm making are from different views, none of which are necessarily my own.

I think it starts when the mother feels the baby move for the first time. I can't really explain why, but it just seems right to me.

Re: when does life begins? ....
Technically I think life starts at conception, but just because an embryo might be alive doesn't necessarily mean it's human. I don't believe that an embryo is a human, but that it is simply a collection of cells.
Also, the point of when a soul is given is moot for me. I believe in a God, but not souls.
I'm not sure when exactly I feel that abortion becomes murder, or if I do at all. I suppose it differs from case to case.

Really? Then how is it that premature babies stay alive & have souls? Was it something dead that was kicking the mother from the inside? BTW, you'll believe in a soul, come the judgment day.

The term "BIRTHday" seemed pretty self explanatory to me, but I guess not to you. It's not celebrated as "conception day". It's an anniversary of birth. Hello! anybody home? Apparently not.

i say as soon as the baby begins to develop a heart and brain - so maybe someone with more knowledge can point out how many months in this is.

Re: when does life begins? ....
Lorill,
You touched on the issue of prematurity. I think your arguments were sputtered prematurely, undeveloped, un-thought out.
I assume your talk of cord cutting indicates when the baby becomes separated from the parent, and runs its own life support. It is thus, living. Born, birthday.
I agree, and separation should define life and soul. I believe in abortion as well. Based on our combined logic, let's kill all siamese twins because they are connected as well. They cannot live on their own. They are dead... to us.
I think I may have you wrong. Maybe you mean when he or she or it is fully developed, the baby's cord can be cut. The baby will then have life, once developed and living. Thus, undeveloped "humans" are not alive yet. All retarded people are dead too. Because they have never fully developed.
By this same logic, you too must be dead. You are dead because you are retarded and you have no soul. Today IS scary judgement day, i am your judge, the offense is stupidity, and you, sir, are guilty as charged.
PS - Mfinley i just got a new comp and will be back involved in discussions. plz dont take my membership. it gives me life. :happycow:

Re: when does life begins? ....
I apologize to everyone for having an opinion.
All I said was that I think life starts when a baby's cord is cut. If that offends some people, get over it. As for the personal attacks, they really do nothing to support your arguments and opinions so why don't you just save them?
tjlax, if you believe in abortion and you think a baby's life starts at some point before birth, then you believe in killing human lives. So your shock-value example of killing siamese twins is being kind of hypocritical, don't you think?

Re: when does life begins? ....
Why does it even matter? There is nothing wrong with killing another human. Even if you look into your Bible, it never says anything is wrong with it. It only says that murder is wrong. It's not murder, in my mind, if the abortion is carried out to save the mother. Of course, my reply still does not answer the question. However, for the sake of.... for the sake of whatever, I think that life starts the moment the brain is sufficiently formed to foster primitive thinking.
