for the guys accesing webrats from work...
as probably some of you know, Microsoft leaves too many footprints to sites that you visit... as example the internet temporary files are marked as S (secret,,, no system as many think), also there is all of the index.dat files in history, internet temporary files, and cookies that is marked S (again ..secret)
you can only access this on real dos (not the dos you access within windows, called command prompt), you can test this... in windows go to internet temporary files you will see 4 directories with some letters as names... explore that... what do you see? not too many files...
re-stat windows and go to command prompt... navigate thru the directories above and voila! you see a lot of files that you could not see before... that can get you in trouble..
I do this at work every day:
1. On windows... change the date... i use 4/23/99 ... almost same date that most of the files in windows... change this to whatever you want... the reason is that once you modify a file this date will show in the details view
2. restart in dos... on windows directory I type.... /deltree /y cookies then.. deltree /y history then... deltree /y temp then deltree /y tempor~1 .. this will delete all of the directories and files with in.. then i restart normaly
3. when I restart .. the above directories get generated in automatic way... but will show the date the you changed before... then I just change the date to today and all of the evidence is gone...
have fun

wow, you go to a lot of trouble to do that. You realize you are doing it the hardest way, though, right?
First off, there are no files in windows that you can only access from the command prompt. Windows XP, at least, doesn't even HAVE a command prompt mode that is different from the one within windows. If you "reboot in msdos mode" it will just start windows and run a command prompt. The only difference is between whether or not you can see system and hidden files (which is an easy setting change in the folder options).
Grab a copy of tweak UI and manipulate the settings to the way you like it (tweak UI is one of the free "Powertoys" that microsoft gives away on their website in the downloads section). Then, set your history and autocomplete to not remember stuff.
I access WR from work all the time (actually, I ONLY do it from work now that the girlfriend started digging around my computer at home so I had to map forums.webrats.com to 127.0.0.1). I cover my tracks fairly well, but more importantly, I guess, is that I'm the network administrator here, so there really isn't anyone knowledgeable enough to catch my anyways.
-Ryan
p.s. If you're not using windows XP, juana, I concede that you may well be doing it the best way. I'm not talking about other versions of windows.

One additional thing: you may consider using an anonymizer program while at work. It acts as a proxy between you and the rest of the web. Your history would show just the anonymizer website, and nothing else.
Yet another solution is to set up your home computer with remote desktop enabled, and just remote desktop into your home computer and surf the net freely from there. No tracks at all
Oh, if you liked my band, you can download two more songs:

If you want to find out the actual IP that you have, just go to www.network-tools.com. The IP that you are using to access the internet through will show up in the box (incidentally, that website is also pretty kickass to do other stuff as well... play around with it... try www.dnsstuff.com too)
Anyhow, in order to run a website on a computer that is behind a router, you'll have to turn on port forwarding in the router. I assume you did this at one point, because it wouldn't have worked without it. If you keep getting the router settings, it may be that your port forwarding disappeared. Check your linksys manual to refresh youself on how to set it up if you don't know how. Basically, you need to forward port 80 to the computer running the website.
About the IP address issue... forgive me but I'm not sure of your level of knowledge, so I apologize ahead of time if I'm telling you stuff you already know. There is a difference between LAN IP addresses and WAN IP addresses. The numbering authority for IP addresses set blocks of IP addresses aside that are only for internal use. One such address block is 192.168.0.1 all the way through 192.168.255.255. When you run a linksys router, I think by default the router will give itself the IP address of 192.168.0.1 with a blank username and a password of "admin" (yes, I've troubleshot my fair share of linksys routers). Through a process called "DHCP" (acronym unimportant), the router assigns other 192.168.0.### addresses to any computer that connects to it. It is possible that when you had a power outage, all of the computers were assigned new internal ip addresses. If you had the drives mapped by IP, and the IP's changed, you may have trouble accessing the other machines. To find out the IP addresses of the computers, go into the router, and click on the DHCP settings, and click the "dhcp client table". This will give you a list of all the computers that your router assigned an IP address to, and their name.
Hopefully some of this may help you. Again, I apologize if I speak below your level, I always try to go for the lowest common denominator. If you'd like to get into more detail, I'm always happy to help. PM me and I'll give you my AIM or ICQ info and I'll see if there's any more I can do.
Oh last but not least- most cable companies don't give out statis IP addresses to non-business clients. If your IP changed when the power went out, it means, in fact, that you don't have a static IP address, it's dynamic. You may want to consider doing a dynamic dns thing to automatically forward to whatever IP you currently have. Like you could get "juana.dyndns.com" and it would always go to your computer, regardless of what the IP address was (that's the definition of dynamic dns). Go to www.dyndns.com to learn more and sign up if you want.
Also, I have to point out, website hosting is cheap. You can save yourself a LOT of trouble by just paying $3.95 a month and having your shit hosted elsewhere. Try godaddy.com or hostvector.com- I've used both and they are fairly reliable. I'm not sure if he still does it, but Eddie also used to host stuff, so he may be able to offer you a deal as well. Anyhow, the choice is yours, but I wanted to give you all the options.

Re: for the guys accesing webrats from work...
thanks utopic...
this is the weird part...
my wan address is reported is all web sites with ip finders as this: (example) 243.25.465.2
but that directs me to the linksys setup page...
if i check the tools from cable company , it lists my wan address as 243.25.465.5.. this one drects me to my webpage index...
if i change to the last address to link my domain name with this... it just do not work... my web page shows... but i do not like the numer part in my website... i have a domain
the only thing that i do not understand is having an ip reported by all of the sites and one by the cable company... and they always stay the same
very good one... on speaking below level... IT men never do that....at least you did not asked me to shut down and wait a few... j/k

Sounds like the cable company has some weird dynamic routing shit going on. Sometimes they'll do this kind of stuff precisely so you have trouble setting up a website or ftp site. They don't really like people running websites on their service, usually (yours may be different).
Like I said before, it's hard to diagnose throught the forums, so feel free to pm me if you want some non-public info.

Re: for the guys accesing webrats from work...
thanks utopic.. I will reset up all the lan settings and the webserver settings this weekend.. I will pm you the results... just a quick question..
for running certain kind of servers do I need to have dhcp enabled? because if I understand right... dhcp assigns a # to the computer when is on,,, but if the computer gets disconected another one could get assigned that number? (within the lan); is not better to disable it and run the settings directly from the ppo in winxp?
I want to be able to run a webserver, and FTP server, an Email server, plus file sharing in messenger... it is a shame because all of those were working perfectly before the power outage... but I never bothered in writing the settings... I got there just by trial and error..
let's see what happens this weekend.. I will pm you the results

Wow. You sure have a lot of stuff going on there
Running your own email server on top of everything else. Are you running exchange, or a *nix box with sendmail or something? Do I want to know what you do with all these servers? :wiggle:
In response to your question (sorry for the HUGE delayed response, but I can't access WR from home- snooping girlfriend so I rerouted forums.webrats.com to 127.0.0.1): Yes it's better to manually set the IP's of each machine, because you are absolutely right, if the machine resets, it could very likely change IP's.

the easiest ways:
clear your cache every day. clear your history every day. clear your saved passwords and autocomplete sections. These are all found in IE under tools->options.
For the record, however, there are always going to be traceable remnants laying around. If you truly want to not get caught, either remote desktop in to another computer (start/programs/accessories/communciations/remote desktop) and use that computer to surf the web (and that guy gets caught) or use an anonymizing service like www.anonymizer.com (they put ads on the screen at all times, but as far as your history goes, the only site you visited all day was www.anonymizer.com).
Best of luck, and I hope you don't have someone like me at your work (part of my job is to make sure people don't do the shit I do...hehe)
