I read this in another forum.. c/p

on behalf of Soldiers past and present, you're welcome... for being able to have views and speak them freely.

It is the Soldier,
not the reporter who has given us freedom of press

It is the Soldier,
not the poet who has given us freedom of speech

It is the Soldier,
not the campus organizer who gives us freedom to demonstrate

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Re: from a soldier...

what is it with America and soldiers???
Soldiers generally would be considered to be the lowest form of human being where I'm from.
Can't get a job - join the army.
Unemployable - join the army.
In trouble with the law - join the army
Got no brain - join the army
Can't think for yourself - join the army.

For fucks sake there's people out fighting in Iraq to make oilmen richer.

Thats another thing that irks me slightly.
You bang on about freedom as though you're the only country in the world that has it. I suspect Ireland has a very small army, a bit of a mickey mouse effort really. We're free, have freedom of speech, a free press, etc, etc, etc.
None of this is meant to cause any offence btw, and I apologise to anyone who is offended, I just don't understand the mentality.

Re: from a soldier...

The mentality is simple, if it weren't for any nation's armed forces, they would be overrun by another country. And throughout history, many nations have lost their freedoms to a superior force.

hard to argue with that, but its not what I was getting at.
I meant the mentality of somebody mentioning troops, army whatever and people suddenly reeling in awe?
Like the first post ...aren't soldiers great...no any of them I have the mispleasure to know are scumbags.

Re: from a soldier...

The point of the first post is a simple reminder of what far too many people take for granted. It doesn't say anything about how great soldiers are.

Re: from a soldier...

We have the best armed forces in the world because they are filled with professionals not because it was somebodys last resort.

And so many other reasons I'm not going to even try to list.

In our country, this is not the case. While some people join the army so that they have money to goto college, others join out of pride and to serve our country. We do not treat our soldiers as the lowest form of job at all, because it is one of the most respectable jobs a man or woman can take up. They protect our freedoms and go and fight without asking why, while risking their lives. This is why our armed forces is the best in the world, and your armed forces is so far behind.

That's Bull Shit....there ARE people who join to defend their countries and to get money for college....

Then there ARE people who join because they have no other option or they won't get into college or their life isn't so great so in order to hopefully get some motivation or what have you, they join the army....

There are also a lot of 18, 19, 20 year olds tagged down with a girl and kids and the army was a good choice to follow to get a job and money to support their families...A shitload of them had NO idea they'd be stuck getting sent overseas to fight a war.

It's just the point of making it seem like all those 18 year olds fighting, and possibly dying, are all doing it for these grand reasons that rang a bit false.

No idea that they'd get stuck overseas to fight a war?? Come on...what person in our armed forces has no idea they have the slight chance of going to war? Thats like saying someone who goes to culinary arts school has no idea they are going to have to cook something.
