Ok, so your kid walks in one day and says he/she needs to speak to you. He/she sits you down, looks you straight in the eye and says, "Mom, Dad, I'm gay."

What would be your reaction?

if it were the only child capable of carrying on the family name.... id be a little pissed... then go make another baby... hopefully a boy. My mom's maiden name dies with her brother cause he hates women and will never have any kids. its pretty sad.

Ok ok but seriously... i dunno... i have nothing against someone who is gay... so why would i be upset? i would love my child even more probably because of the fact that they felt it was something they could come to me about. r0xx0r.

i wouldnt disown them... or treat them differently... they are my kid... my flesh and blood. who cares if they are gay? rawr.

Bleh, all jokes aside i'd love them like any kid...Who cares? It sucks that life might be a bit harder for them or they might get teased more because of their sexual orientation.

i've also experienced, with the gay kids that i know/knew, that when they finally have the freedom to be open with who they are they get into the club scene and dating and hooking up and get a little wild...but i'd just worry because of the higher risks of some STDs and AIDS among gay men, et cetera...

Bottom line, i'd just want for my kids to be safe and who cares who they fuck/love (so long as they are good people).

That's a tough one - no doubt I wouldn't be happy about it, and I would make my displeasure known. But as a parent, I love my kids unconditionally, so I would prolly come around after not too long.

...'course my 11 yr old boy was peeking over my shoulder recently when I was looking at one of Clemson Devil's Macy Sky posts, and I can honestly say that, after seeing his reaction, the boy has a VERY healthy interest in the opposite sex!! Like who wouldn't, after seeing Macy...

First of all, I don't post a lot, but this topic got me thinking enough to say something.

I'm going to be honest and say that I would be perfectly fine with it. Naturally I would have to come to terms with it on my own, but it would be unfair to show my child that I was struggling with it, because they naturally are already under enough stress as it is, having to come out to their dad.

Here's the exception, and I'm sorry if I'm offending here. I have no problem with gay males in general, but I simply do NOT understand the flagrantly gay. If my male son is going to talk with a lisp and go limp-wristed at everything and, in general, take on a 'female-like' way of speaking and acting, I don't know how I would adjust to that. It's true that by now we know that homosexuality is more nature than nurture, but I have a hard time believing that that specific way of carrying oneself is genetic, too. Sure, be gay, be as gay as you want, but don't be something you're not, and don't be ridiculous, and don't be a laughingstock.

Anyhoo, thanks for chiming in! ;-) And if i had an ultra, super duper gay son we could go shopping together and he could help me coordinate all of this seasons latest styles and we could go around being bitchy and sassy to all the ladies forced to shop at JC Penney's and Macy's!

Hehe, i'm kinda hoping i have a kid who's into sports..i don't know what i'd do with a son that wasn't....unless he was as i described above.

It's interesting to see how widely reactions to this news vary. I've had friends who told their parents they were gay and their parents were sincerely touched that they had told them openly and helped her find the courage to come out to friends, other family, etc.

On the other end of the spectrum, I had a friend who, after coming out to his dad, ended up with a broken jaw and a threat of death if he ever set foot in that house again.

As for me, I hope to raise my children in such a way that they feel the topic of sex, much less their sexuality, is nothing to be ashamed of. Generally just a sex-positive enviroment.

I know that sounds wierd, but the basic concept is just a house where the topics of the birds and bees, menstruation, safe sex, etc are not things synonamous with hushed tones, uncomfortable fidgeting and dirty looks. Where sex is viewed as something natural as well a commitment which requires a great deal of responsibility.

Basically, if my kid comes to me and says he/she is gay, wants to know about birth control, etc. I'll know I have done my job.

I would no even bother in asking questions that I should not.. he/she still my son/daughter and that is a fact that does not change... I accept them as they are... the same as they do to me... maybe it would be awkards to talk about relationships, but that would be Ok after some time

hmmm, i don't know about this, cause as i don't have problems with gays, i do see a physical wrong with it, physically and genetically men are supposed to have sex with women and vice versa, and there is something to say about that, yes you can love someone of the same sex and sex does not have to be involved, just like my friends, i treat them no differently than my family, but the sexual desires stem from genetic procreation, so i don't know how i would act, i will have to go with the majority and say i would be cool with it, but have my own personal moral objections to trying to see if they were confused or if they were truly attracted to people from the same sex, or maybe if my daughter had some hot lesbian friends i would want to watch her friends go at it while i sent her upstairs

just in case you havent realized it....i think the majority of people that post anything on here are genuinely nice people most of us seem to be very accepting, and respectful of eachothers opinions and lives. so i could be wrong, but i dont think anyones going to post on here sayin that theyd be totally against it. we're all so accepting of eachother, i cant imagine we wouldnt be with our own children. .....thats for all you wonderful people out there
