EMULATION!

With softmod techniques (software that allows homebrew and backup copies of games to be played, as opposed to hardware 'mod-chips') and the integrated hard drive that comes with the Xbox, you are able to run virtually any emulator on the Xbox. The speeds and quality vary between the emulators, but so far I have running, NES, SNES, GBA, and Atari 2600. When I get more time and when school isn't being a pain, I'm going to try for Sega Genesis and Sega CD as well. There is also a PS1 and N64 emulator as well. I'm still convinced that if you want to 'emulate' PS1 games you should just go and buy a PS2, but it's a nice perk to say that your Xbox will run a competitors software.

The PS2 does run emulators which is fine and dandy. However, if you aren't confident in your soldering skills, you couldn't run many of them. PGEN (a Genesis emulator) would work without a mod chip, but because of Sony's disc checking technology and the lack of updates from the underground community, it was much more difficult to run them. I've tried it.

If you can find Rom dumps and get the emulators on your Xbox, you could easily have 1,500 + classic games stored on your Xbox hard drive to show off to your friends.

I wasn't a fan of the Xbox until I realized the amount of work that could be done with it through the homebrew community. If you are interested in this I can pass more information to you.
