Re: Personal Gun Policy

But...if your life's in danger...waiting is not an option. The analogy about the CWP was to show that something could happen in those three days that could be averted.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

If you're life is in that much iminent danger, I doubt you're going to take the time to run down and buy a gun none-the-less. If it was that bad, I'd think the cops would be called.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

You mean the same cops that never show up early enough? The same cops that can't hit a full size silhouette at 15 yards? No...I wouldn't trust my life to them. I'll trust it to myself and a Glock 35 (damn laws don't let me get it for another 2 years...I don't see how the law judges me responsible enough to vote, serve, and be tried as an adult, but not responisble enough to drink or buy a handgun).

Re: Personal Gun Policy

You mean the same gun that is issued on a lot of police forces!? So, you're saying that you can run down to the store, buy a gun, and make it back home in time to defend yourself? And, these cops CAN hit things MUCH smaller than a full-body-sized sillhouette at 15 yards. My father is a cop, and a sharp-shooter. It's 3 days. Odds are, nothing will happen in those 3 days.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

Didn't say all cops were bad shots...though I thought it was the Glock 17 (standard length 9mm, the 35 is a tactical length .40 S&W) that was issued to a lot of police forces.
Anyway...what I was talking about waiting not being an option was in regard to people that know someone seeks to harm them (abusive exs...etc). Those are the situations that make that 3 day waiting period a bad idea. Then there is the whole thing that it is bad for buisness, wastes people's time, and, like all laws, there are costs to enforcing it.
BTW...hope you have an idea on what to make for your 1000th post!

Haha, I've been wondering about the infamous 1000th post. We'll see! Maybe you're right in the fact that in certain circumstances, there should be some kind of waver for that 3 day wait. However, if your life is in that much danger, why not get police to watch your house? I mean, if your life is in that much danger, and you know it.... go to a freakin' hotel!!

Re: Personal Gun Policy

People still die on the witness protection program in fact, not long ago in my area (northern VA) a girl was killed and dumped in a river by the gang she was going to testify against. Also, accidental (and by that I mean innocents that are killed when they are judged to be hostile) gun deaths from cops are higher than from civilians who defensively use their guns. Don't go and think that I'm saying your dad's a bad cop or anything...
I'm sure you'll think of something. Too bad I missed OG's 1000th, she probably had something interesting.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

Gun deaths from cops are nothing compared to gun deaths at the hands of criminals! Unless I'm misreading what you wrote. Cops are trained to use their weapons accordingly, criminals are not. Unless they were trained to use them threateningly.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

woah now...I never said that they had a higher accidental death rate than criminals...that would just be assinine. I'm just saying that I trust the civilian gun owners with their guns more than some of the cops out there.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

you know the thing about the 3 day waiting period, go get a gun now, so you will not ever be caught in a situation where you will need one in a hurry, and go out and shoot it, i am willing to bet that most people that are pro gun ban laws have never shot a gun, i have been shooting clay pigeons for a while now and it is a fun hobby to have with your friends that can really teach you something that you might actually need someday

Re: Personal Gun Policy

I think you got most of that right there Car Enthusiast, I still think that the 3 day waiting period is just a waste. Something does tell me that a lot of the anti-gunners don't know how fun shooting actually is...been shooting for about 10 years now...I can never get enough.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

I've been shooting since I was 2. To be honest, I think my father's pressure in my becoming a sniper has taken the "fun" out of shooting. But, while I am not an avid marksman, I also do believe in personal protection. Don't get me wrong, the sport is fun from time-to-time, but not on an absolute regular basis. My father has a set target practice regime. I could never do that.

Re: Personal Gun Policy

I do have that target practice regime...but then again, I am getting a scholarship from NC State University to shoot for them...
My shooting rarely deviates from .22 smallbore and .177 air rifle, but I do get to shoot pistol and shotguns occasionally. :happycow: People have asked me time and time again if I'm going to become a sniper...I keep telling them it's quite a bit different than shooting a black paper target 10 m, 50 ft, 50 yds, 50 m, or 100 yds away. They never do get it though...

Re: Personal Gun Policy

Ahh, I was brought up with 500 - 1000 yard targets. That's what I get for having a father who is probably going to end up on a tower someday.
