Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
I don't get a rat's ass if we don't see hockey all year.
The game has eroded. The league needs to be fixed. My God, the Professional Bowling Tour had higer TV ratings than the NHL last year.
And please blame my hometown St. Louis Blues for a big part of the problem. The Blue Notes began over-paying players in the late '80s and sent the league down this path. Idiots!
By the way, the joke of jokes, the Blues hold the record for most consecutive seasons for post-season play. But does it matter? The Notes always take an early exit. And it's harder to miss the NHL playoffs than make them.
Let the boys sit all season. Let them think about getting regular jobs. Go back to Moosejaw. Go work on the railroad or in the mines. Western Alberta needs laborers boys. Get a real job or quit the whine fest!

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
I went to about 7 games in DC after Jagr joined the caps. After they self destructed in the playoffs two seasons ago, i stopped going.
I still can't get over the '00 crease goal that Hull scored to beat the Sabres.
I think Nagano '98 is when it went downhill. A two week hiatus for olympics? no thanks.
Lockout or no Lockout, I'm not going to toss the owners/players more money to see a game anymore. I'd rather see a college game anyway. The fights mean something there. the houses are empty and tickets are cheap.

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
Well, I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I feel badly for the kids whose dream it was to make the NHL and who finally did and AREN'T getting paid the big bucks and AREN'T making the fuss. On the other hand, I'm of the opinion that sports figures get paid way too much for what they do. So this is a necessary evil to knock the wages back down to a more realistic figure.
I will miss watching the NHL games to a certain degree, but as someone did point out, there are other levels that are still operating. We have several Junior A and B teams that are local and it's fun to go watch those. Any NHL games I watched would have just been on tv anyway, because I don't live close to any cities with NHL teams. Live games are so much better.

I like to watch it every now and then. I think it is a dissapointment all athletes are out for is to see how much money they could make instead of just playing the sport they "should" love.

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
I wish baseball would follow this path too after the season, and sort out all its bullshit. Find the Expos a home, or contract them! DH - everybody or nobody! With interleague play, having differences in the leagues is a product of a by-gone era. Also, free agency - fix it! The cursed-by-all-that-is-good-and-holy, thrice-damned Yankees don't deserve to get their pick of the market every year. Since the owners aren't big enough to do what would happen in the real world, and police spending themselves, a salary cap must be imposed. Also, not every team deserves/needs a new public-funded stadium with 62 luxury boxes and family chain restaurants and its own underground parking facility and a walkway bridge where trolls feast on passers-by wearing retro Astros jerseys ... Hell, I liked some of the crumbling old stadiums. They had character. Besides, in theory you go to the park to watch a game, not be entertained by laser light shows and Hooters girls ...
But I digress. I won't miss the NHL until playoff time, really. That's when my interest always peaks.

Great sport to watch, but the system needs to change and the sooner the players admit it the more hockey we will get to see.

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
Alot of players have already joined European leagues for less money. Some have even joined AA league for 500 bucks a week. To think that there is still pros out there playing for the love of the game and not for the benji's says alot about Hockey. Its very refreshing as a sports fan who's sick of these money grubbing crybabies.

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
the NHL expanded too fast. the talent pool wasnt there to fill the roster spots with quality players. the game eroded to clutch and grab. some of the smaller market teams may not survive the lockout. that would be a good thing. a Darwinian thining of the heard as it may be. the good players will be picked up, the flotsam sent to the minors.

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
i just find it funny that the nhl owners are losing less money in the current lockout, than they would be losing if they were actually playing games. they have absolutely no incentive to end it.

Re: Hockey lockout--Thoughts? Opinions?
The whole situation sucks. The owners are greedy and so are the players. They both want all or nothing. If the players win, salaries will skyrocket and the league will go bankrupt. If the owners win, they'll never let up and push the players into a corner until they have nothing left and the league will buckle, when a rival league starts up that makes the players happy. There's no happy ending to this crap.
Also the Players Association only had enough funding to support the players for one season. Beyond that, they'll start missing their millions and have no choice but to give in or lose all that they've got at the point.
