Text adventures were awesome. I started way back on the Commodore Vic 20 with the Scott Adam's adventures on cartridge. As for others that did well, well, Infocom was known for other great text adventures like Leather Goddesses of Phobos and Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy.

As soon as computers became more powerful, most users succumb to pretty graphics in their adventure games, like "The Pawn" for instance. Text adventures still live on in some respect, there are many many telnet muds and muxs out there that still have a good following.
