Where Were You On 9/11?

Since this question is probably going to be my generation's "Where were you when Kennedy was shot?" I thought post it here.

I was working at Sears in the auto center. On that morning, I had arrived at work a little early and was killing time in the break room when my manager rushed in and said something to the effect of "Holy shit! A plane just crashed in the middle of New York city!" We flipped on the television and there was the North Tower in flames. We all just kinda stood there in shock for a moment. Someone said something about how horrible an accident this was and I replied that I didn't think this was an accident. Right then the second plane hit. After watching for several more minutes, one by one we went back into the garage to continue working. It was a slow day and we would all pop in and out of the waiting area to catch the latest developments.

The only other thing about that day that sticks in my head is when several of us mechanics were in the waiting room watching the TV after the first tower had collapsed. We stood there in horrified silence as the second tower gave way. I remember one customer saying "Oh my god!" and the sound of another lady crying.

That surreal moment was broken a few seconds later when a man loudly asked, "Why are you people in here instead of back there fixing my car?"

One of us said something about showing a little respect for the thousands of people that just died, to which the customer replied, "I don't give a damn about them, I have a meeting to be at in 45 minutes."

God Bless America.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

I had gone to a concert the night before, and when I saw the tower smoking at first I honestly thought I was still high or drunk or something. Couldn't process the reality of the situation. When I realized it was for real, I hightailed it into work (a newspaper) and we stood clustered around the dinky TV in our conference room and watched the second tower collapse.

No shit, as the second tower collapsed our publisher said 'Think of all the money being lost.' My boss replied with 'And the people.'

I am very thankful I didn't pull the assignment for airport duty that day. We sent one to CVG, our local airport, and it would have been too much.

I was sitting at home in front of this same computer. Had a couple of days off in the middle of the week. I caught the news on my old ISP, AOL. I don't have regular TV.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

It was shortly before 11-o-clock. It was a Tuesday and my first class in college was at 11. When I arrived in the lobby, the 2 TVs were crowded as hell, which caught my attention since usually there's 2-3 people there at most. The first image I saw was a closeup of the north tower with it's huge gaping hole in it. I watched as they recapped and showed what had happened, and how both towers had collapsed. I went to class and we stayed surprisingly on-topic but barely anyone was there.

(Note: I too have an asshole moment, as the teacher in question counted everyone who didn't show up on 9/11 absent and deducted points from them).

After class, I drove home. I turned the radio on and all they were playing was a loop of Mancow announcing that a plane hit the WTC, and telling everyone to turn on the news.

My brother had it worse than me. He was home sick that day, and was sleeping until about noon. When he woke up and turned on the TV, the first thing he saw was a huge cloud of dust with the text "New York City" under it. He actually at first thought somebody blew up the whole damn thing until I showed up and explained what really happened.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

I woke up to my radio alarm before class that morning and the morning crew was talking about something and from the way they were talking I could tell they were watching it on TV. So I turned on the TV two see both towers smoking. I ran into my roomates room to wake him up. I think I watched TV for about 20 straight hours... it didn't even occur to me to go to my classes.

That night, I wrote down everything I did that day and all my thoughts. I put it in an envelope marked "9/11" that now sits in my desk. I still haven't read it... just waiting til the memory fades a little, I guess.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

I was on my way to school. It was just a few minutes after the plane hit the first tower... so close to 7:05 i believe here in Colorado. Classes started at 7:15. The unique part of my experience is that my high school was on the grounds of the US Air Force Academy. Just before I pulled into the parking lot, for some reason i decided to listen to the radio on the way to school that day, instead of a CD, and a local DJ said they just got word that a plane had flown into one of the towers of the WTC. I immediately thought to myself "It's probably just a Cessna or something, must have been foggy."

I got to my first class, and everyone was acting normally, a few other people had heard of the plane hitting, but nobody knew how severe it actually was. We had a test that day, so we took the test, then at the end convinced my teacher to turn the TV on. The first thing I saw was video of one of the towers collapsing. Everyone was stunned. We just stayed there, the entire class, watching the TV. A while later, an announcement came that the principal was going to address the school. We turned to the in-school channel, and he told everyone what had happened.

They then told us the base was going on their highest level of alert. They told us we were all going to leave. If we had cars, we were supposed to leave right away, and if you had to take a bus, they were already there. Basically, if we were wandering around the base, and didn't go straight home (since almost everyone who goes there doesn't live on the base) the MPs had the right to shoot to kill. We didn't go to school for the rest of that week, and then for two months afterwards, everyone had to take a bus to school, we weren't allowed to drive, and all sporting events were held at other schools.

After we were finally able to drive again, they had to check the IDs of everyone coming on base, and a drive that used to take me 15-20 min, started taking around 45. That lasted until late into my Senior year.

Definitely a day none of us will forget.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

9/11....they were working in my apartment (installing new water piping) when my husband woke me up... he said... hurry up... they are attacking us.... i woke up,... and still sleepy walked to the living room... there were at least 5-6 employees and my husband all glued to the tv...

i could not believe it... (I'm sorry for the next line) but my first tought as same as on the OK bombing was: "please God do not let this to be work of a hispanic"... then after all of the shock ... we just spend days watching the news.... I was kind of depressed... angry at our president and all of the officers at charge (i was hoping for revenge)

i kind of dream sometimes about this... this scares me... but leaving in IN kind of brings me comfort... if it was a conspiracy or not... over 3000 lives were destroyed,

god bless their souls and their families forever

I was at the zoo feeding some of the animals and listening to the radio. They interrupted all the music that morning, and let people listen to minute-by-minute details.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

Ha, here's one I'll never forget. I was actually on my honeymoon. My wife's grandmother called and woke us up to let us know something was going on. We got up and turned on the TV. They were talking about the first plane, and as we were watching, the second plane hit. The honeymoon wasn't supposed to be over til the 15th, but we went home that very morning, not knowing what might happen next.

I was driving to work, listening to a morning radio show. I thought it was a joke. Got to work and found out it wasn't a joke.

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

I was in a taxi on my way to the hotel after doing a flight within the uk. The cabbie asked me what I as a pilot thought of 'all that had happened across the pond today'.
I had no idea what he was talking about. So he explained. I just coudn't beleive it. I ran up to my room and turned on the tv to CNN. Then saw the pictures of the two planes hitting as it already happened half an hour or so ago. I called my wife, and then my mother. in shock. I was very happy not to be flying the next day as the true extend of the drama unfolded. Live after has never been the same. Bullet proof doors, no more pax visiting the flightdeck, and a constant feeling of alertness whenever you go to work, where you used to be without worries...

Re: Where Were You On 9/11?

I woke up for my class (I think it was an 8:00, but that was too many beers ago to remeber exactly) and was getting ready. I sat at my computer to check my email and any IMs I recieved the night before when my friend Tom IMed me. He told me to turn on the TV because some crazy shit was going down. I have a TV/video card so I turned on the program to Fox News. While the program was loaing Tom proceeded to tell me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. They still weren't sure if it was intentional or if it was due to bad weather. I sat there for a few min watching the tower burn and decided since there was nothing I could do about it I'd better get to class.

My class was in the George Bush Presidential Library class rooms at Texas A&M, Political Systems of Latin America I think. By the time I got to class I think the other plane had hit and they knew it was act of terrorism. People were talking about more planes hitting other land marks and this having something to do with retaliation for the Gulf War and our policies in the Middle East. I know that most of ya'll have no idea where College Station, Tx is and there was a pretty slim chance that the terrorist did either. Still it was pretty unsettling sitting in a building dedicated to former president Bush, not knowing what was going on outside. Bush has a private apartment in the library and sometimes stays there and comes to talk to some of the classes at random. All I could think was that the terrorist would try to make some kind of statement and crash into it too. I know it was stupid since they had bigger plans, but still the not knowing was terrible.

When I got out of class I went to the nearest TV and watched the replay of Tower One collapsing. Tons of people were gathered around it: some were crying, some were holding each other, some praying, all had that blank WTF look on there faces. I hadn't seen that many blank stares since the '99 Bonfire collapse. The looks on those student's faces seemed to say "who could do such a think," "what's going on," "when will it end," "where are they going to strike next," "how many lives have been wasted," "WHY?"

After my class the rest of my classes were cancelled or I just decided not to go. I'm not one of those news junkies who sat and watched the news all day, but instead I did decided to hang out with my friends and speculate on what was going on. It didn't feel real to me for a few days. It felt so distant, so unreal, so far away. When they finally gave a body count of those missing and presumed dead a few days later is when the gavity of the situation finally hit home. Then I was just pissed, really really pissed.

So there I was. That was my Sept 11th.
