Wireless Router?
Its time for school again...me and my college buddies got a house this semester. We just got cable and have a wireless router to disperse the internet through the house....my friend that is directly connected to the router through a nic card is gettin 100 Mbps....the rest of us with wireless connections are getting 11 Mbps...is there any way to tweak it to get us up around that or even a little higher?

Re: Wireless Router?
Nope, not unless your hard wired in to the router also. if your getting 11mbps your running a B wi-fi card. that is the best you can get unless your upgrade to a G router and card, but then your never going to use the full 11mbps on the the cable. If you do, i need the hook up in that area.

Re: Wireless Router?
You can get something kind of new called Super G which is 108mpbs
But you'll need a new router and new wireless cards to be able to use it.
As far as the guy with direct access to the router goes, if you're only worried about the speeds from the cable modem, you're not going to get more than 10mbps even if you were going straight from the modem to 1 computer using CAT5, and even then the cable access speeds are only about 2-3mbps anyway, so it still doesn't matter.
However you guys plan to do any LAN party gaming or sharing files, then yes the faster 100mbps connection would help, but he'll still only be able to get whatever the server can put out....so in a way, again it still doesn't matter.

Re: Wireless Router?
Numerous brands offer the 108Mbps speed boost. I don't know if it works well or not. I have G in my laptop and it's great. We have had issues with D-Link hardware at work. I have used Linksys for years at home. No major problems.

Re: Wireless Router?
If you use the wireless network for the internet then it would not make any difference because your download speed may range between 200Kbs to 300 Kbs and that's way below your routers MAX speed rating. It doesn't matter what type of router you have because you will connect to the same speed, now if you want to transfer files between the computers, then It will make a difference.

200-300? Damn you're slow. My connection is around 3400kbps. But of course, my router is 100000kbps, so I almost understand what you are talking about.
P.S. Why you bringing up all kinds of old shit?

Re: Wireless Router?
one thing I want to throw into this discussion is that the megabits discussed here are not the same numbers you see when you are actually downloading stuff from the internet.. when you are downloading, you see kiloBYTES, which is kilobits/8. (There are 8 bits in a byte).
So your cable connection is probably between 2-3 megabits (2000-3000 kilobits) which in terms of download speed is just going to be around 300 kilobytes per second.
Your 802.11b wireless connection can handle 11 megabits, which is 1375 kilobytes per second- over 4 times the speed of the cable modem anyway.
Last but not least, bear in mind that most websites on the internet don't serve up data to people at anywhere near that rate anyhow. Very rarely will you be able to sustain anything above 100-150k/s on a download. Some of the big guns like microsoft can send at that speed, but the average website serves the average visitor at something like 80k/s anyhow. So, of your 11 megabit wireless connection, you will, on average, use 1/20th of its bandwidth.
In other words, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
p.s. On the flip side, 802.11g does have a much farther range (5x further), which I enjoy considerably
p.s.s. Any other nerds like me- I know there's actually 1024 kilobits in a megabit, but I'm too lazy for that math... let me generalize

Re: Wireless Router?
With my SBC DSL, I'm rated at 3000kbps down, and on a good day, I'll average 330 Kbs.
For some poor layman, a good dsl or cable connection is at the most 3000-5000kbps. 802.11b is 10000kbps. It's pretty simple if you think about it.

Re: Wireless Router?
Damn I live in this crappy apartment and I am way below all of you I am lucky to get 300kbps. I know if I had 3400kbs I could watch multiple porn streams at once.
