Olympics Controversy
Anyone else following the olympic controversy in the men's gymnastics? Now there starting to cry foul in the women's too? Any comments I would like to hear, personally I think it's stupid.

Re: Olympics Controversy
I would have liked to see Hamm give up his gold medal to the South Korean. . . but I guess you can't really blame him too much for not. The gesture would have been amazing. . . and it can't really feel good to win the gold medal in that fashion. In reality, the South Korean *did* score more points than he did.

Acctually he didn't, he performed to many holds on the parallel bars which should have been a .2 deduction. Had they started his score correctly, and scored his performance correctly, he still would have been behind. It was not Paul Hamm's fault, so why should he be penalized. The South Korean was lucky that the judges did not see the illegal hold, or possibly didn't count it because they knew he had screwed up, or he may have not medalled at all.

yeah i read about the extra hold. i would have liked to have seen the south koreans get really stout about it, then the us pull out that trump card and pimp slap them back to earth. i too thought his win was a little tainted, but after seeing the holds on a replay, the south korean did infact do too many, and should have gotten a deduction. So paul did win legit.

Re: Olympics Controversy
okay, I'm late to this party but I think Hamm should keep the gold, even before I knew about the "illegal hold". What's done is done. And booing him (or anyone) at the closing where the champions all strut their stuff was bad sportsmanship on the fans. South Korea always have to cry about something... remember the boxer in the '98(?) Olympics? We sat in the middle of the ring in protest.
And that Russian gymnast saying she's competed against better gymnasts than Carly Patterson... Well if that's the case than you competed and still lost lost too a weak competitor if that be the case! Screw her and her rotten grapes, she's a has-been anyway!

Re: Olympics Controversy
Here's the real deal, by rule, any scoring related protest must be lodged immediately. The protest was entered the next day, which by rule is illegal. The protest must be made during the event. Once medals are awarded, the event is over. Period. Blame it on the crybaby coaches who got caught not doing their jobs. Had they lodged a protest at the time of the infraction, their claim would have been legitimized. As it is, the losers should have kept their mouths closed, because they're only showing their imcompetence. Perhaps, we should send them a copy of the rule book with the protest section highlighted.
Sadly, the world will remember the controversy, rather than an extraordinary competitor coming back from 12th place to win.

Re: Olympics Controversy
Well said lefty! It is too bad everyone will remember the preotest rather than the fact that he came from deep in the whole to win the gold.
