Price for Freelance Computer Work
A co-worker of mine e-mailed me saying her computer is having some major problems. I'm assuming Spyware/Adware, possibly some virus infection, things of that nature. What's a fair price to charge? I'm think somewhere around $30/hour with a 2 hour minimum.
(fyi, she's what you would consider the "Old hag" of the office....you know evey office has one)

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
In the state of California it is the law that you charge for at least 2 hours of work. For simple crap like that $30 seems fine. But if you need to rebuild I would up to $50.

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
$30 sounds pretty fair.. just remember to undercut the local businesses (like Best Buy.. don't know how much they charge) otherwise she'd be better off going somewhere else.

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
As with any business, charge what you think your time is worth. You can try and undercut the local businesses but that's not always a good business model. If you feel confident in charging her $30/hr then do it. If you feel it should be more then you should charge more. Certianly BestBuy, CompUSA, CircuitCity, etc. is not going to give her computer the level of service/attention that you can give it. Be confident, do a good job, explain to her what you are going to do and don't BS. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
Well if she's the old hag of the office, you should turn down the work quick. Check into there being a claus in your employment that prevents you from taking on side work. Being that she's the hag, no matter how good you fix it, you won't do it right and she'll smear your name amongst your peers.

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
Do 30 an hour with a 1 hour minimum. How many things take longer than an hour? A half hour even?

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
If you are sure it's mostly malware removal and nothing else, you can also just set a flat fee, anywhere from $30-50 no matter how long it takes. You can make a pretty good business out of this, as LOTS of people need help with this. Word-of-mouth.

Re: Price for Freelance Computer Work
I charged $20/hr for a 2 PC job I did, I knew it would be a long one so I didn't want to overcharge and lose the deal. Most local shops are $50+. So I think I may bump it to $35-$40. Generally I get better overall results than the shops too, since I'm more focused on a sinlge PC.
