Longhorn
A few months ago, I was beta testing Longhorn (the new Windows OS that will be coming out in 2006). I was running 512 MB of RAM at the time, and the OS caused my computer to run really slow. Longhorn looks really cool and I think it will have better security than XP, but Microsoft must be ecpecting 1 Gig of RAM to be standard whenever the OS comes out. Anybody have any other experiences with this?

Re: Longhorn
till then they will make it more efficient. but i think this will need some hacks in the .net runtime. hackers will be happy.

Do remember that Beta's are not nearly as refined as the finished product, so they usually do take more resources. That in mind, I could see 256 MB as being the bare minimum, with 512 being the recommended minimum.

we had the same problem also on a machine with 1ghz ram and a 2.4ghz pentium... actual problem was since the Os is still not even in beta stage.. (like in alpha I believe) it had a process that was taking up all the resources.. once that process was killed longhorn would run fine, nice OS btw... been reading about the new filesystem and it looks like it will revolutionize alot of things if it comes out.. but Microsoft is still debating.

Re: Longhorn
Exactly WHAT features does this new OS add to justify making it such a resource hog?
(My biggest gripe with the Windows platform is how few of the programmers know how to create tight, efficient code....)

Is it that they don't know HOW or that they just DON'T? I'm sure microsoft knows what they're doing when they leave their code messy. They charge out the butt for their tech-support--which generally sucks. It's called planned obselescence. They sabotage their own product, because M$ has such a hold on the industry that they know that the everyday computer user isn't up to migrating to Linux. So they have to go to M$ for support for M$'s own faulty product. They make more money that way.
Anybody ever heard of trusted computing?...

Re: Longhorn
by 2006, i think a gig of ram isnt out of the question as the standard. When i worked at circuit city a couple years ago, i really pushed the 512mb cause most of the people were planning on having their puter for a few years at least.
the people who wanted this computer for temporary use who replace every year were power users who needed the 512 anyway. A gig will be standard come 2006.
LoL i forgot how much ram i have... *checks* ouch... 512.... lol i thought i had a gig...
