My Monitor died....
Ok, I'm in the market for a new monitor. I'm looking for your experience on any and all recommendations of what to look for, what to stay away from, who makes good, who makes bad, etc. etc. So if you were spending someone else's money, what would you buy today?

Re: My Monitor died....
Depends on what you want
Do you want a flat panel or a CTR?
What size do want and what size will you settle for to fit within the budget?
Speaking of budget, how much do you have to spend?
VGA or DVI connection?
Extra features; like the ablity to be not only a computer monitor but also a TV, or maybe built-in speakers and/or mic and so on and so forth?

Re: My Monitor died....
I recommend the dell line of monitors. I have two 2001FP's and they absolutely rock. Cost me 750~ each though.

Re: My Monitor died....
I'm open to flat panel or CRT. Even though I know CRT's are way better visual quality, I wouldn't snub flat panels for this reason alone.
I don't think I care about DVI connections. I have no intention to use for television type viewing, but you never know?
I'd like to keep it under a grand but I'm not firm on that budget.
I already have speakers and a mic so I don't have any interest in that feature.
Bigger is better in my book. I have run dual head configurations in the past but I just didn't care for it. I'd rather use one really big display than two of any size.
da_jew: Do you think you paid less/extra for the 2001FP monitors because they had the Dell name branded on them? What was it about them that sold you on them?

Re: My Monitor died....
I have a SamSung SyncMaster 173 and love it. If you can afford bigger, I would go with some 19"s, but, I like the Samsung LCD's better than the other brands out there. This one has only one dead spot and it's in the corner.

Re: My Monitor died....
I love my 17' LCD. It's and LG model, looks much nicer then any other imo. Like a mac type. Cost about $500 at bestbuy, was definately worth it for the 16 ms, 1280 x 1024 resolution it supports.

Re: My Monitor died....
I'm in the same boat - I need to get a new monitor in the next couple of days. I want a LCD, but as a hard-core gamer I'm concerned about the things I've read. There's 2 LCDs that I've liked. Both are 20" and have a 16ms refresh rate. One is the Dell, and the other is a Viewsonic VP201 series. They're both in the same range ($750ish).
I'm just not wanting a monster 19" CRT sitting on my desk anymore!

Re: My Monitor died....
I recently picked up a 19' Samsung flat screen CRT from best buy for 200 bucks. It looks great and supports some high resolutions.

Re: My Monitor died....
I finally decided on the ViewSonic VP201 20.5" LCD to replace my old 19" CRT pig. I just picked it up last week and so far so good. After hearing all the horror stories about LCDs, I wasn't sure if I'd like it... especially with the $730 pricetag.
So far so good and the picture is bright and crisp. Movies are fine and images are great. I'm running max resolution 1200 x x1600, which is native for this monitor. I've played Half Life 2, Call of Duty, Far Cry, and Doom 3, and all showed no blurring.... though I'm using an ATI x800 pro vid card and dvi input.

Re: My Monitor died....
Once you go with a flat panel you'll never look back. We buy Eizo brand flat panels at work and they are great. I've bought about 50 of them over the past 3 years and we've never had one go bad on us. Right now I'm sitting with 2 19" Eizo monitors hooked up to a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 280 64MB which will drive both at once.
