I am so not technical and don't know what they are called...but how would I be able to tell if someone downloaded a program on my computer to record keystrokes and chat messages? Is there a way to know?

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Ad-aware and Spybot should be able to find keyloggers.

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

I am not sure about ad-aware but Spybot will detect at least some keystroke loggers and other activity/screen loggers. Whether it will detect all or even most keystroke loggers I am unsure. But here is Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Well if ad-aware will detect that kind of software then I definately advise that you use both pieces of software as one scanner is likely to catch things that another piece won't.

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

You guys rock. I already have both those programs. My ex has access to my comp and I really am not interested in him reading any of my instant message chats.

Thanks, guys.

If you're using XP, change your password.
If anything else, change your password to your IM client(s) and set it to not remember your password

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

Yeah but if someone did install a keylogger on her system, they would have the new passwords.

Run a program called "Hijack This" and post your results to one of the security forums out there, most of those people are willing to help. I suggest computercops.biz and the security forum at dslreports.com. A lot of the poster there are helpful.

Okay, I've taken your advice and done that. We'll see if anyone takes pity on me and helps me out. Thanks for your suggestions, Kaos.

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

Sometimes it helps to be aware of what programs are running on your computer whether they are malicious or not. Open up your task manager and go through the list comparing it to the descriptions on this website.

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

I use to run a keylogger, and it never showed up in task manager, spybot or ad aware never found it, i had to manually uninstall it. there are programs out there like spy searcher and such that would help but you gotta fork out some money =(

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

if it allows you too.. everytime you use a password.. see if you can put a space.. or a backspace.. it mixes things up in key loggers.. plus it is REALLY easy to make a key logger run in the background invisibly, most of the new anti-virus softwares and spyware software's will catch the key loggers... the one I have used before to bother my friends was klogger.exe very simple.. and just writes a log file , i just installed it as an invisible service.. and it was running..

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

Well, I bought PestPatrol and holy shit, did it ever find a lot of crap. I do realize that there are programs that can avoid detection, but if it was running a log, and I changed my options so that I could see hidden files on my computer, shouldn't I be able to find the logs? I guess I'd have to know what it was called or what the extension was.

Re: Detecting keystroke recording programs

Or even if it had an extension...

One (painful) way would be to do a system search for any files that were modified today. If a keystroke logger is active, its timestamp is going to be updated with every push of the button.

EDIT: holy crap I'm a .... I broke a thousand finally.

Shhhh....look how close I am to 1000 and I've only been here since last month. That's it. This is my last post ever.

Edited to add: Elfoozo, you're a clever boy to think of that. How would I search to find all the files that have been modified today?
