Re: Children?

"I fail to understand why people wouldn't want to have kids. IMO that's being a selfish ass."

Yeah, this annoyed me as well. Why should I spawn more life into an overpopulated planet? I think that people who have more than two kids could be called selfish more easily than people who don't bother to breed.

My dad was a selfish bastard and he never should have had kids. Growing up around him was a hell I'd wish on no one, grown up or child. Don't tell me he did the unselfish thing by spawning me, if I had a choice between my childhood and not ever being born, I'd take the not being born.

I can barely handle having a needy cat, I won't risk repeating the mistakes of my parents with a fresh victim.

So your dad brands/colours the rest of humanity and undermines your self belief...ie you know you were worth better than you were treated....so why would you not treat a child accordingly? Do you really consider you haven't the capacity to break free of your marred upbringing? PreMed ......hey there are more than needy cats out there!

Re: Children?

Personally, I think it takes a stronger person to go against the societal norm and NOT have kids. Anyone can have a child with little foresight or planning. It takes great pains to make sure that doesn't happen. And I totally appreciate the thought and soulsearching that goes into choosing not to reproduce. I find those people to be highly conscious of themselves and what they are realistically capable of, and selfless to make that sacrifice for whatever reason and I respect them immensely. Having children is not a prerequisite for dying a fulfilled person. Just because they don't have kids does not mean they do not contribute to society in some other meaningful way.

Re: Children?

I have two kids and I love them to pieces. I wouldn't trade them for the world. My 7 year old son loves to read and play on his computer (just like daddy ), and my 5 year old daughter is a little thrill-seeker (just like mommy). There is nothing in this world that compares to watching my son's face light up when we enter a bookstore or the smile that I get from my daughter after she gets off those spinning rides at the fair. My daughter justed started kindergarden yesterday and that was kind of heart-breaking, just knowing that my little baby is growing up.

As much as I love my kids, I have to agree with others around here. Some people just should not have children. Not everyone is cut out to be a parent. There are way too many children out there that are abused, physically and mentally, and no one should have to go through that.

very well put. I think if you are going to have a child you should be financially able to do so and be ina secure family environment. You see so many young kids or people who can't afford them having children. We end up paying for them through the system and that is not fair at all!

So your dad brands/colours the rest of humanity and undermines your self belief.
Dad hasn't undermined anything. But monkeysee monkeydo and I don't really see why I should put myself in a position to possibly fuck up another kid.

..ie you know you were worth better than you were treated....so why would you not treat a child accordingly?
it's simple human nature. I'm not comfortable around kids, and I don't particularly like them unless we're talking about my sister's or my housemate's. I'm not a natural. I'm wonderful with animals, though. Perhaps I could go about saying that those who don't adopt at least two shelter animals are selfish?

Do you really consider you haven't the capacity to break free of your marred upbringing?

No, but I don't really think it necessary to spawn as a method of breaking free. I'm fine, why add kids to the mix?

Hey...I don't doubt you've thought ths through.....and I agree with your last comment......I was just trying to point out that humans come in all sizes.....you deal with toddlers who are wise beyond their years, and adults who will never be more than overgrown children. There's nothing in the rule book that says anyone has to have a maternal or nurturing bone in their body.....but it helps to understand the human condition if you have a future in health care, and there is no doubt that parential input can colour your expectations and maybe negatively influence your response.
btw....if animals love you....then .....as I've never known an animal to be wrong with regards character judgement, you can't be half bad...XXX

I know her in person, Clams, and she is one of the very few people I fully expect to still have as a close personal friend at the end of my life. She is nothing if not wonderful.

Re: Children?

I want at least 6, preferably from the same woman, if not, oh well. YES, I plan to give them the best of everything. I'll have the means to do so when I'm ready to have them.

You'd have fun with six kiddies, though, Juan. I have no doubt they'd give you a run for your money! :happycow:
