anybody currently reading the series? Anybody read Song of Susannah yet? Anyone believe stephens little blip at the back about the books writing themselves and using him as a medium or is he messing with our minds? WHat about when roland comes to see him, do you think that he really put the story away and forgot about it? DId roland and eddie remind him about it in a dream maybe or some drug induced vision?

discuss.

Omg...I love this series! I saw the title of the thread and sat up straight and got all excited!!!

I have just started reading it, so I can't discuss anything about Song of Susannah, but would be happy to once I'm done.

As for books writing themselves, as a writer I can say that some books do do that. Not so much in terms of the characters being some spirit beings talking to you from the Great Beyond, but often I am startled by the things I write or what the characters do.

Re: Stephen King's The Dark Tower

I have all of King's books in hardcover (except for a few that didn't come that way). I paid no more than $5 a copy at Library book stores where the locals contribute books.

Anyway, I have only read through Wizard and Glass. The first one was complex, The Gunslinger. I like the way King incorporates characters and events from his other stories into the Dark Tower series. The Stand, Insomnia, and Hearts of Atlantis immediately come to mind.

Fantastic series!

Re: Stephen King's The Dark Tower

I love the series! I've fallen somewhat behind though, I haven't gotten Wolves of the Calla yet, or Song of Susannah. I really like how lately he's had his other books, such as Black House, tie in with the series somewhat.
I've been meaning to get the new ones, but I've been catching up on my fantasy reading(R.A.Salvatore and Terry Brooks). Plus I keep thinking the trade paperback(big ones) should be coming out, which is what I have the rest of the series in. The first one were hard to find in hardback, especially Gunslinger.

I am a total King fanatic, dark tower rocks. Unfortunately i too have fallen behind. Could it have anything to do with the amount of time between books? I never know when new ones are published. I cant stand finishing a book and then waiting for the next. Oh well maybe ill just wait till he is done with the series and re-read them all start to finish.

Re: Stephen King's The Dark Tower

the dark tower series is the first books i've read by King since The Tommyknockers. definately some of his best stuff.
he is in desperate need of an editor that will trim his novels by a few hundred pages.

Re: Stephen King's The Dark Tower

Stephen King is by far my favorite writer . I have yet to begin with the Dark Tower series though. I want to order them in English, to improve my English skills. Do you think it would be too hard for me or would it make sense? And mfinley, is it better to read Insomnia, The Stands and Hearts in Atlantis first before I start with the Dark Tower series?

I'm reading 4 seasons at the moment. Great stories, especially The Escape wich became the movie ''Shawshank Redemption'' later.

Yeah, for a while, every time anothenew one was coming out, I go back and re-read the other ones. But by the time four books have been out, that's alot of re-reading! Now all of a sudden, he spits the last three out in less than a year!(the last one comes out Sept 21) WTF? I just wonder if he's about ready to retire. I've read he's had problems with his publisher and such, he may just be trying to fulfill any obligations right now....

Re: Stephen King's The Dark Tower

Okay, I spent very little time here the last couple days so that I could finish the book and post about it.

Potential spoilers below.....be forewarned!!!! If you haven't read it, close the thread now.

Okay, the idea is that the reality of the book is the true reality and the world that you and I and the Stephen King we know is actually one of the alternate realities. He was hit by a car in our "real life" and survived; in the reality of the book, which is the "true reality" he dies. Therefore the journal at the end would be fictious to us but real to them.

Now, as for putting the book away for years, yes he really did. In the other books, in the introductions, he has explained that. There was a huge gap because he got too interested in other things. Of course, he expounded and fabricated more into it than was true, in terms of feeling like an incarnate of Gan and feeling like a muse and being pressured to hide the truth and not write. Also, aside from perhaps dreaming about his characters, they never really visited him. I have written things and been surprised at what I've written, but never to the extent that I feel possessed, and judging from his prior explanations in the prior books, neither did he. He just wove himself into the story and stretched the truth.

It was a very neat twist to see him make a cameo in this series, especially after all the other characters from his books that have crossed paths with Roland and his ka-tet.

I've just gotten into the series, being only about three quarters into the gunslinger, so i can't comment on most of this yet, however, i can say that at this point it seems very engrossing and that i can't put the damn book down.

hmm a lot of people I talked to thought it was just lame for him to write himself into his book but I think it makes an interesting twist. Can't wait for the last one. when did someone? say sept 21?

I'll admit that when I first saw the characters mention him, I immediately thought, "What a pompous, arrogant thing to do! I'd never put myself in my own book, especially in such an important role as being the key to the whole survival of the dark tower." But as I continued reading, I found he portrayed himself in a rather humble manner and that made it bearable and somewhat interesting.

I don't know when the next one is coming out but I do know that after he got hit by that car a couple years ago, he vowed to write them as fast as he could, which is good because it would suck if he died before he finished the last one.

Re: Stephen King's The Dark Tower

Fans of The Dark Tower series might be interested in knowing that in S.K.'s collection of 14 short stories called Everything's Eventual, there is a story about Roland. It is based on a period of time after Susan Delgado but before the seven books in the Dark Tower series start. The novelette is called The Little Sisters of Eluria.
