No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
I reveive this (read title)message every time I boot.
Is it possible that my IDE cable is connected backwards???
Is there a front side or doesn't it mater how they must be connected?
Also,
I had win XP pro, then I installed winXP home on my new hd (200gb).
When I boot, I get the bootmenu to choose XPhome or XpPro.
Pro works fine, but the new home edition gives an error (something about a wrong specified partition)
I press enter-- it reboots-- I do just the same thing and ...
the home ed. works fine...
help anyone??

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
IDE cables have to go a certian way. They have a notch on one side. If it's a dual fifo cable, make sure the doubled end is connected to the drives. Possible a bad cable?
Don't know about XP, though, haven't had a chance to use it. Still stuck on win98

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
You will sometimes get that error if you are using a 40 pin cable on a drive that requires a 80 pin cable.
As for the XP problem, you can drop to DOS and type "bootcfg /?", it will show how the boot configuration is right now, and you might need to edit something in there to make it work 100%. BECAREFUL though, if you make the wrong edit, you might need to boot from a floppy and fix it.

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
Do you have XP Pro and Home installed on the same 200 gb drive or are they two different Hard Drives? It sounds like you are using a 40 pin IDE cable on your new 200 GB which requires a 80 pin cable. If the cable was reversed then the system would not detect the drive.

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
I've got a 60gb HD for Xp home
and the 200gb HD for the pro edition.
I've got one 40 ide cable and one 80 ide cable...
i've changed the cables (have also 2 cd drives)
(1 hd +1 cd = 1 ide cable), reversed them
then I noticed that the distance between my 200gb hd and my cd drive was too long to reverse that cable...
SO I think I've to get a new (longer) 80 ide cable...
about the bootcfg...
I can't run it in dos... I can edit my boot via system... But there is Nothing wrong...
thanx 4 the help m8s

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
Well, if you can put the two HDs, 60GB and 200GB, on the same primary IDE controller with the 80 pin IDE cable. then use the 40 pin and put the two CDs on the secondary IDE controller.

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
yep, thats the best way to do it. Your hard drives should be on a seperate channel from the cdroms. Get better performance that way.

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
that I can do... I used to have it that way... but when I wanted to copy cd's on the fly, the proggie I used said I had to make sure to use different Ide's for the cd drives...
so I thought that would be the best...
guess not then
thx again

Re: No 80 IDE conductor cable installed //bootmenu's?
Well, if the drives are extremely fast, then it might make a difference having them on seperate channels. I have a 8x DVDR/W and a 52x CDrom, and I've never had a problem with them being on the same channel.
