Payton to the Celtics
Lakers and Celtics swapped some players on Friday. Lakers shipped Gary Payton, Rick Fox, cash, and a first round pick to the Celtics for Chris Mihm, Marcus Banks, Chucky Atkins, and a second round pick. How does the deal look?
I think its a great trade for the Celtics. I hate Payton but will take him for one year (contract year). Fox is also done after this year if he plays at all. The move clears cap space and the guys leaving won't be missed as the Celts drafted three first rounders to take their places.
The Lakers get to get rid of Payton, and Fox, and get a much needed big man in return, Mihm. They also get a young PG in Banks and a veteran in Atkins.
I think both teams got a pretty good deal.

Re: Payton to the Celtics
I don't know about you, but it just seems like a short term solution. Payton probably won't stay long since he has only a year, but I doubt he'll renew his contract with the Celtics. I heard he wasn't happy about it. Thoughts?

Re: Payton to the Celtics
It's a salary cap move. Clear some cap while staying competitive and developing the young guys. Also like soxfan said:
"ESPN.com's Marc Stein writes Aug. 6: "Boston's Danny Ainge continues to chase Portland's Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Hard. So hard that the Celtics might soon be landing 'Reef in a trade."
That would be GREAT!

Re: Payton to the Celtics
I think the Celtics are losing a great guard in Marcus Banks. In a couple years, I fear that he will be one of the predominant PG's in the league

Exactly, stop trading away young guys for players that are past their prime. I thought we were rebuilding for the future. Rick Fox and Gary Payton certainly aren't the future. Danny Ainge has no plan for this team, he took over a playoff team and turned it to shit. The playoffs last year was a fluke, the players were sending a message to Ainge to fcuk off, "No lottery pick for you!"
My other issue with this trade is why help out the Lakers? Why help them when it looks like they might have some serious issues next year. Also, Fox will probably retire, so we essentially traded three players and a 2nd for Payton, cash and a conditional first round.

Salary cap baby. The Celts get to rid themselves of Chucky (aquired via a bad trade) and his 2-3 year big money contract. They get Payton for a year then clear space, and yes Fox is almost certain to retire. There is more cap space. So in essence we moved some salary and get to rent payton for a year and then draft another 1st rounder and pay for some quality free agent(s) with the money we save. I think its a good deal. Don't forget Mihm was a sign-and-trade so he may have been gone anyway. I am sceptical about Banks but the word out of Celtics camp is the coaches are in love with Tony Allen want him to be the future. I know we've heard that before. We'll see how it all shakes out.

Re: Payton to the Celtics
Celtics amend trade.
Boston, MA --The Boston Celtics announced today that the August 6th trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, in which the Celtics received Gary Payton, Rick Fox and a conditional first round draft pick in exchange for Chucky Atkins, Chris Mihm, Marcus Banks and a second round draft choice, has been amended. In the amended deal, the Celtics have sent 6’8” forward Jumaine Jones instead of Banks to the Lakers, and no longer includes the Celtics second round draft choice.
Boston still receives Payton, Fox, the conditional first round draft pick and cash considerations.
In my opinion, with the amended deal the Celtics got the best end of the deal hands down.

Re: Payton to the Celtics
I agree soxfan. I thought the Celts had a good deal to begin with. The amended trade gets even better! thewalrus and I were talking yesterday and wondering if maybe the Celts package banks now for Shareef Abdur-Rahim. That would rock!
