Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I was taught growing up that you never pick up hitchhikers 'cause you'll end up getting robbed or killed, especially if you are a woman alone in a car. Hehehe...my mom was paranoid about certain things.
In my area, we have lots of kids between the ages of 14 and 21 who come here in the summer to pick fruit from across the country. And so there are tons of hitchhikers. I have often been tempted to stop and give them a lift, especially the female ones or the young ones, but it's so ingrained in me that I shouldn't. I know if I had a huge snarly dog in the back seat, I totally would.
I don't know. Do you pick up hitchhikers? Should a female feel apprehensive about it?

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I wouldn't, unless they were good looking young girls who's car just broke down... cause that's how stuff in Penthouse starts.
Seriously, I wouldn't want my girlfriend ever picking up a hitchhiker if she was alone. I would say don't ever do it, especially if you're alone. Maybe if you had a friend, and they looked very trustworthy, but walking is good for you.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I don't think it any off the rumors of picking up hitchhikers and then getting killed actually happens. I'd bet that it happened once or twice and some producer thought it was a good idea for a horror flick. The odds of picking up a crazy, murderous hitchhiker are probably slim to nil. I know I've picked up plenty of hitchhikers in my day, and not one of them killed or raped me.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I've only picked up a hitchhiker once. I was Christmas Eve of 2003, and snowing outside, and this old man was walking REALLY slow down the road. At first, I zoomed passed him, then I got the thinking.. "its fuckin Christmas, maybe I should turn around".. so I did.
Eventually, I pulled up next to him, lowered my window and asked him why he was walking on Christmas Eve in the snow in the middle of nowhere.. his answer.. "I'm on my way to the train station so I can go see my daughter in PA, and my car is broken, and I have to walk. Well.. since the train station was like 10 miles away.. I offered to give him a lift. Even though it was a few miles out of my way, I took him all the way there and said have a nice Christmas.
Just the feeling I had from doing something so nice to help someone, especially on a holiday, really meant a lot. That's the only time I ever have. Would I again?? Prolly not, unless the situation was similiar..

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I think that picking up hitchhikers is a dicey situation to get oneself into. I don't mind the aspect of helping someone out if they are in need, but damn you have to be careful these days. Then again if it was a very cold day and a person was walking and there were no places near by, then I would probably pick the person up and take the risk.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I'll be a little skeptical but like many have said it depends on the person, situation and if I have any friends with me. Or if I'm bored and need some company I would. But then again look what happend to those kids in The Chainsaw Massacre

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
I had a friend in the army who hitched from Oklahoma to Oregon to see me. He got rolled on the way back. I usually don't pick up hikers but have once or twice.

I live in Tallahassee and last week a guy that was stranded on the road tried to rape a girl who stopped to ask if he needed to use a cell phone...

I don't pick up any hitchikers. I know I'd be the one in the story that gets raped and gutted.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
i pick them up, cause i have had my car break down and been picked up before, and it would be a really fun ride if an idiot would try to hurt me while i am driving THEM down the road at the speed limit, cause i would roll my car before letting them have it or my money, never had a problem with it

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IF YOU HAVE A PICK UP TRUCK JUST LET US HOP IN THE BACK. IT'S NO DANGER AND YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO TALK TO US.
Sorry, that's the AT hiker in me coming out. If you see someone with a backpack on that is clearly a hiker, I swear to God we're not dangerous.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?
Problem is that we don't know that you aren't. People with a backpack could be a murderer on their way accross the country, and don't want any witnesses. You just don't know
