Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?

I had a friend who was coming home for xmas while stationed somewhere in the army. He picked up a hitchhiker. 2 months later, they found his decomposed body in his trunk in the parking lot of a shopping center in Montana somewhere.

I used to pick up hitchhikers. My rules were, they had to be dressed like I would dress, and they had to have a sign. That was a long time ago. I wouldn't pick one up today. The quality of hitchhikers has degraded significantly over the years.

In a world of freaks and serial killers if one picks up a hitchhiker they are writing their own death sentance!

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?

:wiggle: I have a hitchhiker story now!!!!

Okay, those of you that have been following my fascination with hitchhikers had to know I was going to eventually pick one up. :happycow:

So, this weekend I was driving to Vancouver to go to a concert and I had passed a couple hitchhikers and I almost stopped but it just didn't feel right. But then!!!! I came around the corner and there was this absolutely adorable young blonde cleancut kid doing this little dance with his thumbs out and I just thought, "Fuck it!" and I slammed on my brakes at the last minute and skidded into the pulloff spot.

I asked where he was going and he said Vancouver, so I said hop in and started tossing empty water bottles onto the floor in the back of the car. Nowwwwwwwwwww....I must mention that I drink a TON of water, which results in me being the worst person in the world to take a cartrip with because I will stop to pee every 45 minutes. So as I'm tossing these bottles into the back, I suddenly see a whole unexpected snag with this otherwise wonderful hitchhiker plan. The option of peeing on the side of the road suddenly has been eliminated, and what the hell do I do with him if I stop at a gas station? Do I ask him to get out of the car? Do I lean over him and lock the glove box, which seems so insulting?

So, I'm pondering this as we start to drive and I realize there's no way in hell I'll be able to hold it for 3 hours. So as I'm trying to figure this out and zipping down the road at 150 kms/hr, we start chatting. Turns out he's an engineering student from Germany who's been hitchhiking through Canada for the last four months and is on his way to Vancouver to catch a flight to the maritimes for a quick look around before heading home in a week. So he regaled me with humourous stories of the different people he's run into and finally I realize I HAVE to go to the bathroom.

So as we approached a city, I asked if he needed me to stop for anything, and being the considerate hitchhiker that he was, he said no, at which point I very unceremoniously blurted out, "Well, I have to pee!" and pulled off at the next exit. I pulled into the gas station parking lot and I was resigning myself to the fact that I was just going to have to be rude and ask him to get out of the car until I got back, when he exercised very good h.h. etiquette and hopped on out to go buy a sandwich. Yay!

He was pretty laidback the whole trip, even with my fast driving and only made a couple comments, such as, "You're not very worried about speeding tickets, are you?" and once, when my car didn't accelerate like I thought it would and it was a bit of a close call, he simply stated, in an extremely casual voice, "That was kind of risky." hahahaha.

But then it started to rain really hard and we got into rush hour traffic and this car slammed on its brakes and we had to veer in various directions to avoid a pileup and it was actually very scary. So since I almost killed him, I offered him the extra ticket I had for the concert I was going to, and he accepted. So then I had to try to explain it to my friend without looking absolutely insane. "Hey Sarah, ummm....I'll be bringing this guy I just picked up on the side of the road to the concert tonight with us....hope you don't mind...he's really nice. And from Germany!"

So we had dinner together in this little cafe, went to the concert, exchanged emails, snapped a pic of us for his online photo journal, and then I dropped him off at a hostel. Yay! It was totally fun and not only am I still alive, but I have a new friend! I do know that I totally fluked out but now my burning desire to pick up a hitchhiker has disippated.

Y'know, O.G., this account started off an awful lot like some of your other stories we've seen posted around here...and we all know how those end up.
So, are you suuuure you're telling us the whole truth about this weekend's cute little foreign hitchhiker experience? Eh? *nudge, nudge*

(It's common knowledge, after all, that authors tend to write on topics most familiar to them.)

Hahahaha...it was allllllllllllllll innocent, I assure you! A quick little hug when we said goodbye and that's it.

If all the Penthouse stories didn't start with a hitchhiker, I might be tempted to explore it for a story theme, but it seems to be highly overdone.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?

I hitch-hiked all over Buffalo, Western NY, and from Akron to Kent State Ohio to name a few places, back in the 70's. If I am not in a hurry, I always pick them up when I can. Lotsa nice people out there... but I pack a lasered .22 for comfort!!!

I've never picked up hitchhikers, but I've stopped to help change tires. Could be just as dangerous...

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?

I have been picked up a few times before (car problems, no way home from work, etc.) and haven't had a bad experience yet. I have never picked up anyone though, hell I don't think I have even seen 5 hitchhikers in the last 5 years... but I would definitely be cautious. There is always a chance that you will be putting yourself in an enclosed space with a psycho.

Re: Picking up hitchhikers...Yes or No?

It's always good to help someone out, but nowadays, you just can't trust anybody. Back in the days of the wild west, everyone was packing a shotgun, so if you got out of hand, you could just reach back into your wagon and put him out of his misery.

Now, with all the escaped convicts/druggies/shady people, I wouldn't risk picking up any hitchhikers. I hear too many stories on America's Most Wanted about how some good samaritan picked up a hitchiker and then paid for it with his life. If you're lucky, you'll just lose your car at gunpoint, but it's just not worth it.

Ordinary Girl, looks can deceive. You are lucky to still be alive.
