Nah, you never know what people have nowadays. if their car broke down and you have a cell phone you could offer to call a tow truck or something. but you cant be too careful nowadays.

A few years ago my car broke down at dusk by a freeway running through California farmland. The first thing I worried about was that I was transporting a litter of orphaned kittens that needed to be fed every 4 hours. So they were in trouble. Second, the traintracks were nearby, and there was an overpass, so the area was teeming with transients. I figured I'd take my chances with the truckers and a nice firefighter picked me up and dropped me at a gas station. So he saved me, possibly, but he very certainly saved a box of wee kittens.

I'm starting to wonder how many of you would have left me and my kitties by the side of the road? I would have picked me up, no doubts.

Great story, Hijacker. Good for you for stopping. Unfortunately, put me down as a no as well.

It's a shame. . . which there was more trust in this world, but in these times, you can't be too sure that the person you are picking up is safe. If we lived in a safer world, I'd be all for it. Helping our fellow person and all that. I'd consider it, if it was obvious that the person was safe. But I haven't yet.

And if I was a female, no way in *hell* would I come anywhere near a male hitchhiker.

Only ever picked 2 up.

First was a shit stinking bloke that we felt sorry for cause he was in the middle of no-where. Got rid of him quickly!

Second ended up being a butt ugly hooker... she walked!!!

You have to go with your gut instinct but GUYS - be warned... don't pick up a lonely gal off the side of the road... what if she crys Rape or Assault, your screwed and not in the positive way - stay SAFE!!

I'm not scared of male hitch-hikers. And they've never given me a reason to be. I've picked up several male hikers, nothing ever happened. I've also been to several frat parties, and I'll tell you, those are much more dangerous.

I am absolutely obsessed with the notion of picking up hitchhikers. I realized as I was driving along the other day, that I am just waiting for the perfect opportunity to stop and offer one a ride. I was a little disappointed that there weren't any on the way to the next town and on the way back, there was only two rather burly, frightening ones standing together and I don't think I want to pick up two at once. I realized, however, that I just HAVE to do it...my curiosity won't be sated until I do.

So if one day I never come back, it could be because I've finally given in and picked up some hitchhiker and they've killed me.
