I am working on a solar setup to water my yard. Since I live on a river I want a 12v dc pump to run off a marine battery and during the day it can charge off the solar panel. I havent really had time to sit down and figure out the specifics yet.

Re: How practical is solar power?
Solar power is too expensive to be effective. Solar panels have a short life and are expensive to replace. It will NOT run all of the stuff you need and will be more trouble than it is worth.
Shawn,
Use gravity, if the river is moving fast enough. If not, then good luck!

It's NASA... ya... and to get enough solar power to actually be worth anything would cost a lot

The Solar pannels that NASA uses, you wont be able to afford
Also, they dont have to worry about falling debris, wind, gravity, moisture, or much else in space.

I am going to call these guys when I get a chace to see what kind of warranty they have and what the average life span is for a panel. I bet 4 of these 120watts on the roof will really help with the electric bill.
