Re: Gun Control in America
Gun control laws are only effective on people willing to abide by them, thus only non-criminals will be in compliance with concealed carry laws or the like. A criminal, by definition, doesn't care about the laws of society, so a strict law on the purchase of a gun or who may carry a concealed weapon means nothing to them. My guess is that very few criminals that are using a gun to commit a crime obtained it legally anyway.

Re: Gun Control in America
Gun control is hitting the target. hehe! But seriously, I am all for a "cooling off" period and background checks to purchase a weapon. My dad was a WW2 Vet and pro-NRA. The best thing he did for me was how to handle a gun safely and to treat it as always being loaded, even when it was not. We would go out to the range when I was younger and I learned about the power of guns and that they are not toys. Like for many problems in this country, education is essential.
Criminals will always find ways to obtain guns like Frogman said. But when I hear talk of banning weapons altogether I am very much against it. Banning weapons will just make it harder for the regular Americans to protect themselves against the criminals that can easily get guns through the underground.

Re: Gun Control in America
comment about gun control means hitting the target is awesome
the biggest gun control that is needed in america is strenous classes to be able to have guns and permits for more extreme weapons
all of the pro gun control people cite things that need to be changed, but most of the ideas they have are already in place but not abided by criminals

Re: Gun Control in America
Exactly, the people that need to be "controlled" are the people who don't care about laws anyway.
Although there is a valid argument for the rare accidental shooting when a kid finds dad's gun and plays around with it. But I also think most of these accidents could be prevented if you properly educate your kid, don't keep the gun a secret. If you let the kid fire it when you are there to supervise, and tell him where you keep the gun, it loses it's novelty quick.

Kids can get killed in shopping carts or stair rails we can't legislate parents duty.Guns need to be respected but never controlled. The quickest way to loose your freedom is to give up your rights.

Re: Gun Control in America
We have enough gun laws out there. Putting more on the books just takes away the rights of the law abiding citizens. I believe the officials should ENFORCE what we already have and stop the stupid laws like the Clinton Gun Ban ( http://www.clintongunban.com ) that do not do anything but take the "Dangerous" looking weapons off the streets. It makes no sense to ban a gun because it looks omnious. The mechanisms are the same, so why is one legal and the other illegal? It's a truly useless law. Thank God its going to sunset on September 13... I really hope this ban is NOT renewed. Criminals don't obey the gun laws anyways, if they did, would they be called criminals? Taking every gun off the streets ( like Feinstein would love ) wouldn't solve any problems. Criminals will get them regardless, and we would be defenseless. A burgulars biggest fear would be to break into a home and find that they are looking down the end of a gun barrel. If they knew we didn't have weapons, that element is gone and there would be a free-for-all. Look at whats happened in Australia, home invasions have increased!
As for education. That's what's most important. If our kids know that they are NOT to touch a weapon and to get a responsible adult if they ever see one unattended, it would save most if not all of the accidental deaths and injuries.
The responsibility falls on the parents... I have no children, but all my weapons and ammunition are secured in a safe. I believe charges should be brought upon the parents if a child is able to commit a crime with his or her parent's weapon. They should ALWAYS be kept safe and away. If you can't afford a way to secure your weapons and ammunition, you shouldn't be purchasing a gun.
