DVD Burners

I'm looking to purchase a DVD burner in the near future. Does anyone have any suggestions? So far I'm looking at several Lite-On drives, including the 812S and the 851S. Has anyone used those before?

Cool. I think I may pick up a Lite-On LDW-812S from newegg. It's only $60 and it's easily upgradable to a 832S, which is a DL burner, via a firmware patch.

Re: DVD Burners

No way - hands down this is what you should buy:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...-152-023&DEPA=1

Dual Layer! (Although there are no dual layer discs out yet - probably a month away).

My friend bought one of these, it's a damn good burner for $77.

Re: DVD Burners

Either one will work fine. I also bought a BTC branded as Emprex from Fry's for $69 no rebates and stuff and everything worked fine. Of course, my main criteria for whether or not a drive is good is simply by how much it vibrates. I just can't stand fast writers that sound like a buzzsaw. I'd pick the slower one that was much quieter everytime.

Re: DVD Burners

I have the 8x liteon, i think the 812s, it came with really crappy software mysonicdvd, I had soo many problems with it a first. But when I started using roxio 6 and dvd xcopy I have burned at least 70 movies with it. I just ordered the 12x liteon too not a dual layer, although I considered the dual layer 8x. I chose the 12x just because I heard that there is so issues with burned dual layer disks in the tv dvd players as well as pc dvd players. I have been able to use the dvd xcopy to compress dvd backups with no problem. Plus disks are around $1 a piece dual layers are going too be a lot more for some time.

Nah.... I want to get the 812S because it can be DL too with a simple firmware patch. The firmware patch brings it up to a 832S. Doing it this way I save $17 and end up with the same drive as you!

DL media does exist, btw. If you buy a 50 pack ridata spindle from newegg they'll give you a free DL disc. By themselves the DL discs are running about $15-$20.

Re: DVD Burners

I use the lite-on duel and it has worked flawlessly for DVD's and CD's. I have only made maybe 50 CD's and 20 or so DVD's. It is only a 4X but does all the formats.
