Need help with my DVD Burner!

Hi all, my Memorex DVD burner finally bit the dust about 6 months ago. At the time I purchased it almost 4 years ago it was the 1st 16X with dual layer unit made. The spindle motor speed kept changing....so it was time to ditch-it. I purchase another at Office Depot under their name called Ativa. Found out on the web that the company that makes it is the OEM supplier to Dell, HP, etc. It worked fine till about 6 wks ago. Now everytime I try to burn a Data DVD or Clone, or even a CD-R I got a "Communication Error" message right after lead-in. I can sometimes burn a DVD using Nero Express (custom DVD), but you can't stash data that way. I re-installed Nero-6 & all the updates but it does'nt help. I checked to see if my settings have changed, & the DMA is on & all settings is the same. I can hear it start to "spin-up", then slows down....jezzz. No problem playing any format though. I'm thinking a chip maybe bad that allows it to communicate with the Hard Drive. I F**k-up & did'nt purchase an extended waranty ($7.50 from Office Depot). Anyone got any idea's??????

Happy 4th of July weekend!!!
