Re: Rotating Skyscraper In Dubai

Not in Dubai, though maybe somebplace else...

They are building all kinds of crazy shit in Dubai right now. I'd love to go visit, though I keep hearing horror stories about people getting caught up by their customs officers for ridiculous stuff, like the British guy who spent over year in jail for marijuana possesion -- though the amount he "possesed" was a trace, not visible to the naked eye, that they found on the bottom of his shoe.

Looks pretty cool to me, especially how each floor will rotate independent of the others

I'd like to check Dubai out. Not to live there, just to see what they have. If I remember correctly, they have an indoor snow ski area there. Also, I think they have built several islands in various shapes with hotels, etc. Plus, they have a Hard Rock!

I can see that as a great placed to be in an emergency. The fire alarm goes off, the elevators lock out on the first floor and you live on the 45th floor. With all that rotating, who knows where the damn emergency stairwells will be located.

Licu: Ohh! That's a great thought. Sounds like someone has a background in fire systems, inspection/testing, or possibly builiding inspections.

Yeah, I was a electronics specialist working as a senior service technician in Fire Suppression Systems. We also dabbled in Building Fire, Security, and CCTV Systems. Greatest problem with building systems was after the fact servicing. Usually, the owners never have them inspected and call 20 years after they were put it when they didn't work during a fire. Laws may have changed since I work last, but I still wouldn't recommend living anywhere over the second floor.

What?!
The article says Dubai...why would you say not there?
That's the dumbest remark I've seen in ages...
Am I missing something here? Didn't anyone else notice this?

Re: Rotating Skyscraper In Dubai

We need to do more cool stuff like that in the U.S. Seems like the US is slacking on this stuff. Remember when the Mall of America was the biggest mall....now it's not even in the top 10. We no longer have the tallest sky scraper. We can still say we have the richest man......but how long will that last? All we can say right now is we have the biggest waist line.

Yeah, systems testing can be fun, especially after the acceptance tests are completed and your company wins the contract to perform regular tests (montly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual). I do some research on the communities where I am teaching; I don't stay in hotel floors above the city's ladders can reach me or hotel that do not have a fire sprinkler system.

Don't you love it when a company makes a call about tests, etc. and do not realize they are not grandfathered under the codes when the system was originally installed?? Sometimes, the NFPA can be your friend!

The National Sports Center, theatre, collapsable bridges, valleyfair, other moderately enjoyable things

I don't really do the water stuff
