Looking for a new job

Many of you know I work in a hospital; I'm the safety/emergency manager for the place. I plan for all the strange stuff that happens (chemical spills, airplance crashes, bombs, etc.) and enjoy the job. I'm a .8FTE, meaning I am paid for 32 hours of work each week. I am salaried, so if I spend 80 hours working during responses to emergencies, I only receive compensation for 32 of those hours.

I have opportunities for two other positions in the area. One of the positions will allow me to use my fire protection engineering skills (life safety, drills, education, etc) and the other allows for me to use my teaching, emergency planning, and medical skills. Both jobs have the same salary and benefits.

How do I rate these positions and make a choice??

If they pay the same, pick the one where you have to do less or pick the one that you like the most (i would go for the less work one)

Re: Looking for a new job

Why don't you just work at fucking Walmart?

Same great hourly work package (my guess is that your benefits are nill to shit since you are >40 hrs.)

People are always dropping shit and puking/pissing/whatever in the aisles (cleanup skills).

Lot's of old people and fat fucks that may need defribilitating and stroke care (medical skills).

Seriously, I've been to a Walmart 4 times: Phallan Nevada, Olive Branch Mississippi twice (I laughed so hard I went back again) and one somewhere here in SoCal. I service a lot of Walmart's vendors through their import freight movement, and I've read a shit load about their business practices and I've seen F. Lee Scott speak (CEO).

From that limited exposure, your shitty job and the shitty jobs they provide may just be a match made in low income heaven!

Re: Looking for a new job

Fortunately, I gave up the gross portion of work when I left my firetruck and ambulance. I'm more into the emergency planning processes, exercise evaluation, "lessons learned", and improvements. I do miss the adrenaline rush and other excitements. At times, yes, I do feel like walmart could be an improvement!

The fire safety job seems nice. I think I would like it. The teaching job is more along the lines of the consulting work I have done for about ten years. It requires travel, public speaking, and liaison work with several federal agencies (again, similar to my consulting work). I like teaching; I like public speaking.

I think the teaching job may pay slightly more.

Re: Looking for a new job

We can't really help ya here except to give sarcasm and general advice to the tune of:

Balance out the pro's and cons of the jobs you are being offered and find a happy median of pay versus stress and go with it.

Then again, we all told ya to skip that fucking baby shower and you went ahead and attended anyway, so go ahead and do as you wish

spoken like a true stoner!

If it's a long term job prospect, I'd go with the one that you think you'll enjoy the most. This includes the work environment. There are some challenges with my current job but I think the fact that we're so politically incorrect is worth bajillions of $.

If it's a short term job prospect, I'd go for the one requiring less effort.

Also consider things like proximity to your house (esp with gas prices etc), flexibility in your schedule, work clothes, manner of addressing coworkers, etc.

pick the one closest to home, so when gas hits $6.00 an gallon you will feel like you are saving a ton.

Re: Looking for a new job

The jobs are at the same facility; the work site is 10 miles from my house. Currently, I drive 28 miles one way to work. This isn't unusual down South! Both jobs are long term positions. This evening, I spoke with folks in both departments; I think the teaching position fits me best and the pay is about $6000 more. I don't mind the amount of work; I'm an ex fire truck riding guy. We're very used to hard work at the most inopportune moments.

If I have to travel, it will be to locations similar to where I've done consulting work with the same folks I've done the consulting work for. This does make my life a little easier. I've clashed alot with some of the feds; I guess they'll get used to seeing my smiling face.

Both positions seem like good jobs. Hell, I can have a great time and laugh no matter where I am at. I think that is what makes me ask for some outside thoughts: two great jobs open at the same time. Which one??

Juan: will I ever in my WR life live down the baby shower?? I learned alot about how the womens interact... What will it take to get my man card back?? What should I do if I'm ask for my man ID?? Display the tool????

Re: Looking for a new job

juan: shot a cat yesterday; I can do the pimp slap, but I've never, ever had sex with a hooker. Also, my current side work requires multiple drug tests; I don't see me doing any of the above while high. I haven't had anything stronger than homemade corn whiskey. What about protected sex with a known partner, in a foreign country, while drunk, wearing a t-shirt proclaiming my leadership of a militant cell of the Salvation Army??

Re: Looking for a new job

Good luck! Nice to see there are opportunities in your neck of the woods. I just looked on Careerbuilder.com for jobs in my area and the first few results pages were scammer work from home postings.
