Keep it on topic guys. We're talking about what you are doing personally to reduce fuel use.

all I have been able to resort to is to fill my tank at the halfway mark. Yes I fill up more often but it does less damage psychologically. Not in a position to buy another car at this time...fucking taxes, and in So Cal you gotta drive to work if you're gonna work so I can't really drive less.

Pretty much. Here in LA they have recorded increase of use in the metro lines. Problem is, they don't go anywhere most people want to go. They were designed to run through the poorest neighborhoods and take them to obscure neighborhoods where factory jobs are. They never had the white collar worker in mind. Plus side is, a lot more out of towners moving in for white collar work are moving in to latino neighborhoods. My brother in law got his first white neighbors a few months ago. They couldn't afford anything else anywhere and they are relatively close to downtown LA.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
Diesel just topped $5, but then went back under. I have a 180 mile round trip to make every week. I may be able to eliminate that for a few months. At least I get nearly 30 MPG highway. I too, fill up every week at about the halfway point. Still costs about $40. Around town, I average 150 to 200 miles per month. I could cut that down easily enough by walking to work and riding my bike more.

Seriously though, I just don't think these high prices are going to last. It's doing so much damage that something has to give on the supply side. There will come a time soon when many people with cars won't be able to afford driving them. When the demand is shot, so will be the price. $2.50 a gallon is pretty much too high as it is.

Your argument is flawed... Over half of all cars sold in Europe are diesel. So if people here stop driving diesels, it just helps free up diesel fuel for Europe and China. On a global market, the oil is in high demand... just because WE may start using less doesn't mean that a country with more money to burn (China) won't pick up our slack.
Here's an interesting article I heard about on the radio a few days ago...

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
Paid 4.29 yesterday. Last gas station on way to work and I didn't realize that if I went to work I wouldn't make it home. 30 miles round trip from closest gas station to work and they charge extra for ATM or credit.
I drive a truck and the wife a Sentra. We now use her car to go anywhere we have to go. We also limit our errands to one day a week. Even when I go someplace with family we all take the smallest car that fits everyone. I also check the tire pressure every weekend.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
So I filled up yesterday, took a little voer 100 bucks. Didn't think much of it...until I got on the freeway. No traffic except for the usual ill-designed junctions. I haven't really been going out weekends as I have a lot of stuff to do here at home and it helps with gas budgeting. But wow, what an eye opener. Seems 4 a gallon is the breaking point for some people to stay home.
I started looking back at all the topics on here about the oil crisis and couldn't help but have a little pain in my stomach....it was really scary. Plus that and I was stoned and think way too damned much. But seriously, wow...
So it's obvious we are going to see a lot of this type of thing happen. Wonder if its a positive thing to get people to get more in touch with their communities and help each other out. It's gotten way too easy for americans to just hop in the car, drive to a mall, and waste time.
Back on topic though....now with less traffic, I do see an increase in MPG. But better MPG is leaving the truck parked and doing my business closer to home.
Saw a couple of vespas I wouldn't mind driving around town. Seriously

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
Ya know, in my original post, I said a lady in a minivan honked at me when passing me on the interstate. Now I REALLY know why. My GF was following me on the interstate and called me. She asked how fast I was driving. I told her 55 MPH. She called bullshit! My speedo is off by 6; I was driving 49 MPH on the interstate!!!
Well, at least the gas mileage has been pretty good. Gas prices have stabilized here at around $3.73/gallon.
Tune up what you can, combine some trips, find things to do closer to home, and just try to have some fun!

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
I haven't had a car in 2 years but I'm still appalled by the price of gas in the DC metro region. The cheapest I've seen is $4.02 per gallon. I take the metro to work and now more people are riding, which is a good thing, I guess. We're sort of stuck over a barrel at the moment(pun intended)but maybe people will get serious about conservation and developing other energy sources be it fuel cells, cold fusion, wind, solar, whatever. Why not all of the above?Even if gas drops back down it won't ever drop below $3.00 again and we'll have been conditioned to think that's a bargain. Why did I stop driving in spite of being able to afford a car? I did it to get uncle sam off my back as quickly as I could. I'll have those back taxes paid off soon but I don't think I'll rush out to buy a car anytime soon.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
We've been staying in a lot more than we used to and when I do go out for errands I try to do them all at the same time. Though I haven't really felt a noticeable dent in my wallet from the gas prices yet.
My work's been talking about switching to an four day work week to save people on gas. The company owners are all about "going green" so we've been trying to convince them by making the point that switching will lessen our 'carbon footprint'.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon
Queso: yes, it lessens the footprint! What's better is the extra day off. Your wallet and you win! What could be better?
Yesterday, while returning my rental car in Detroit, I filled up at a station near the airport. I paid $4.23/gallon. I got gas in Toledo, OH at the Pilot station on Alexis Avenue for $3.83.
