Holy F'n Earthquake batman
sitting at work, and just sat through a 5.4
I know I know.. ya'll in cali are prolly thinking.. geh... try a 7..
well, a 5.4 for the midwest if pretty fucking cool.
I lost $5 on it though.. fucking thing.. there are 6 of us here, and after it happened the betting began on how big it actually was.
I figured it shook the building.. so I went with 4.5.. nope. 5pointfucking4..
least I dont have to worry about a tidal wave
good times..
last time I felt a tremor I was actually in hollywood Ca

Re: Holy F'n Earthquake batman
i've been up and around since 0430 (CT) ...
didn't feel anything here in north central minnesnowta .
yep , an eathquake of any magnitude is a rarity in the upper midwest ...
in this area , it's a different deal :
The fault structure under the New Madrid region is a "failed rift" created by the opening of the ocean that later became the Atlantic Ocean 650 to 600 million years ago .
The largest of three or four big seismic events that stretched from December 1811 to February 1812 is called the New Madrid Earthquake and had an estimated 8.0 magnitude, strong enough to cause the nearby Mississippi River to temporarily flow backward. Its epicenter was in the town of New Madrid in southeast Missouri, near the Kentucky and Tennessee state lines. Hundreds of aftershocks followed for several years.
The damage from the New Madrid quake was bad enough in the early 19th century—half of the town was destroyed, but with many more people and buildings now in the area, a similar event in the region today would be devastating, seismologists and engineers agree.

Re: Holy F'n Earthquake batman
i believe that is correct .
the mississppi river changed it's course radically in some areas due to that earthquake .
normally , the river will change course thru a process known as "meandering" ... it can cause the formation of "ox bow" lakes/ponds/sloughs .
there were some geographic level changes that happened , this contributed to the formation of new bodies of water .

Re: Holy F'n Earthquake batman
That 5.4 most likely did more damage than a 6.4 in SoCal. We have different building codes. We had a tiny tornado down this way once. Damaged a few roof tops. It was a big deal on the news because we don't get many.
Too bad it was on a Friday. This would be the topic at work for a couple of days. Now by Monday it will be over, unless they have to close a major road to check for structural damage, and you end up being 2 hours late for work.

Re: Holy F'n Earthquake batman
you know what makes your 5.4 worst than our 6.00+es? Your building code doesn't design buildings with seismic conditions. You guys add for snow and wind and junk, but never seismic. You guys have waaaay more potential for destruction, just less chance of it.

we sleep thru 5.4's out here, but yeah I suppose it's pretty exciting when you don't get quakes that often
