Connection help
I reinstalled windows xp professional on my computer and now i can not seem to get anything to work. Most of all I need to get my internet connection working so I can connect to my network and reinstall some files I moved before reinstalling windows. My connection says it is connected at 400mbs but it is not sending or recieveing. Everything I do does not work to get a new connections. When i try to create a new connection it goes through a few steps then it says that my current connection should be good. I am sure one of you computer guys out there can help me out with this. I am connected through a LAN line running through a router then a hub for my network here at work, nothing has changed within that system. All i did was reinstall windows and now I can not get a connection??????????

Re: Connection help
well i dont remember installing any drivers except for whatever the windows xp disk did by itself.
There is something weird though, the computer has two hard drives a C and D and for some reason there is now another one; drive G, which has a windows folder, programs folder, and documents and setting folder.
I have no idea where this came from but it was there when the computer booted up after the installation of windows

Re: Connection help

do i need to do the install on windows again to format so i dont have the G drive anymore.
I know the drivers are not installed, under the device manager they are all not installed.
but these vaio desktops dont come with restore disk or anything
so i guess i need to find them on the net and get them on there through a flash drive or something but i dont know which ones i need

Re: Connection help
ok so its vaio
they be buggers to get the driver
google the number under the pc it gives i think 2 letters and 4 to 6 numbers
google it with the word driver behind it
i think the site gives you the express download or you can install them individualy
so to format you need to reboot and push F8 when the pc is starting up
enter / F8 / esc / delete / enter / L /at this point it will take you back to a page showing 1 unpartitioned space and 2 drives follow steps delete / enter / L untill you just have a single unpartitioned drive (at this point you can create a new partition if you realy want
then press enter / up arrow key / enter
and there you go its formatted and the installation has started
if you want to find out your motherboard number to google the drivers to make it easyer than working thru the very painfull vaio site find a program called belarc advisor
it tells you all you need to know about your PC
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
that should help

Re: Connection help
a question that might save some time and grief : why did you reinstall the OS ?
as for the "g" drive , looks like windows made a "failsafe" backup/copy of the important stuff ... look in the documents folder and see if any of your old settings/info are in there .
to find out what "drive"/partition is actually the boot section , stop the comp during the start-up sequence ... most likely the "flog away on F8 and you might get lucky" bit .
the setup screen will show you the device boot sequence .
you should be able to get the complete set of drivers that came with that machine at the sony site . as for no disks with the machine ... that is odd .
funny though ... you are getting data transfer ... check to see if the ethernet adapter is enabled as the connection device .

Re: Connection help
ok well when i reboot this is what happens:
it first gives me the choice of starting windows xp professional or windows xp home edition
at the bottome it says press F8 for advanced start up options
after pressing F8 is gives these options:
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command propt
enable boot logging
enable VGA mode
Last known good configuration
directory services restore mode
debugging mode
start windows normally
reboot
return to OS choices menu
What should i press under here?
I had to reinstall windows bc a program I use here at work was giving me problems and I called the company of the program and after like 2 weeks no one could figure out what the problem was, so they suggest a reinstall as a last choice.
when i have the choice of starting in either professional or home edition and i pick home edition the computer boots up like it used to with all the programs i used to use, but the one with the problem still has a problem
The professional version is the one i installed, home is what come on the computer
I tried system restore points before the reinstall and that did not work to fix the problem with the program

Re: Connection help
that means your boot sequence isnt booting from CD/DVD
press del during start up
and look for boot process and set it to CD or DVD depends on what you have on the pc

Re: Connection help
hmmm ...
let's try this ... i assume that the networking and all else was/is working ok with the original version of xp (home) minus the "problem" that you were having .
what was the "problem" (maybe i missed it) you were having (second time asked) ?

Re: Connection help
OK you booted from the XP CD right?
If not you need to do that (it is in your bios startup settings-choose CD as your first boot source & then restart the machine with the XP CD in the drive).
Then follow yellowfish's instructions in post #6 about deleting all partitions and then once you have only unpartitioned space, you make a new partition which will by default be given the letter C.
If it doesn't default to letter C, you still have old partitions on there; lather rinse repeat.
Once you only have one partition, C, install XP to that partition.
Bear in mind this is all done from the XP boot from the CD - if you are doing anything at this point from within the windows GUI, you're doing it wrong.
Have your company network settings & your PC network settings written down and handy because during the setup process you will be prompted to either let windows automatically set up your network or you choose to set it up - you will not let it do it automatically, you will use the settings you have written down i.e. gateway address, IP address (or DHCP), DNS server etc.
Eventually your XP installation will boot up & you can start fine tuning your settings.
If you got that driver disk from the Sony website you should be able to use it whenever you are prompted for device drivers as they are discovered during final setup/first windows boot. In fact have it at the ready because you may well be prompted to use it during any of the above steps.
