Piece of paper?

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
I have heard comments made that marriage is just a piece of paper....I hate that comment. I personally believe it is the giving of your life to another and vice versa. It is the gift of loving men and women to each other...it is a statement that they promise to be with you and only you....so now I wonder when people make the comment...it is only a piece of paper....how long they have been or will be cheating....

any comments on this from the forum?

Re: Piece of paper?

Just met a girl that doesn't believe in marriage, she says if you really love someone it shouldn't matter if your married or not.My only problem with marriage today is people give up way too easy now and divorce is spreading like wild fire..really pathetic in my opinion.

Re: Piece of paper?

I recently met a girl that doesn't believe in promises because "promises are made to be broken." So I guess she doesn't believe in marriage, either... I completely agree with you, TigerLand, divorce is WAY too common these days. It's not that people are only giving up too easily, but sometimes it's the wrong decision (too young, don't know the person long enough/well enough, etc).

For me, marriage is giving youself to someone else, and when you say you'll be with them through the good times and the bad, you mean it.

Isn't it something like around 50% of all marraiges in the US end in divorce now? I'm thinking it could be way off. Out of all my friends, only like four of them have parents who are divorced, and i swear i have more than 8 friends.

I think one's religious views will make a better determination of whether they believe in it being just a piece of paper rather than the giving of their life and complete devotion.

Seeing how it was God that created marriage, people who are more religious will cherish marriage more than those who are not so religious.

Now, personally.. I think its a bit of both. If your willing to committ yourself to be in a serious relationship with someone, you should be COMPLETED trusted, loved, charished, and everything else already. Marriage shouldn't express anything knew in your relationship rather than "sealing the deal" religiously, and emotionally.

May I ad an additional question to this...

What is your opinion on those who wish to get a pre-nup??

Re: Piece of paper?

I don't quite agree in prenups except if you want them to say something about each gets what each earned...if you help with a business or house payment you should get exactly what you put into it...whether it is financial or emotional, etc...if your wife works as a secretary in your business for 20 years w/out a paycheck to help you then dammit compensate her...if your husband pays the housepayment then why should you get the house?

No way can it be more than just a piece of paper, but there are far too many divorces these days - there are also far too many cheaters too. I don't believe in Pre-Nups - to me that means you're expecting to fail before you start - in which case don't get married.

Re: Piece of paper?

I think marriage in the Christian sense is a joke. I think commiting to one person is a serious affair that doesn't need religion getting in the way... depending on the country one comes from, a legal marriage (rather than a church ceremony) is a very good idea as it helps protect everyone involved, especially any children.

Re: Piece of paper?

The point is simply it is all how one views marriage. Usually you find a mate with generally the same beliefs, outlook, and lifestyle which would be compatible with your own. Everyone has an opinion which is what makes each of us individuals. For this reason it is not necessarily right or wrong to say "marriage is just a piece of paper" since this is just an opinion. I would simply reply in the sense that find a partner who has the same beliefs you do!!

Re: Piece of paper?

Marriage to me is presenting yourself in the eyes of the Lord to become your wife's provider and love, honor, and obey each other.

Marriage in front of a judge? Piece of paper that says if you try to break your vows, your partner gets half or more.
