I have no general religous belief...none. I hear some say that they don't either but then tell me they are wiccan...there is still a rulebook(bible) and social structure...the same with satanism. I just want to know, am I the only one who considers these organized religion?

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

You know, I've considered myself a pretty hardcore atheist for years. But as it happens, I ended up marrying a woman who is a Christian. I've gotten in trouble more times than I can count for Jesus jokes and otherwise condescending remarks. But a few years back, she turned me on to the Universal Unitarian church. I still don't attend on what you'd call a regular basis, but it's a nice compromise for us. The wife gets her "church fix," for lack of a better phrase, and I get to go to a place where they don't beat you up with guilt for every little thing. I guess you'd have to call it "organized," but it's a very loosely-affiliated group in terms of belief structure. There isn't any central idea that everyone is required to believe, other than general stuff like respect for your fellow man. It's very humanistic, which I like. I've never been big on the whole Supreme Being concept. I guess what I'm trying to say is that my church IS organized...in an unorganized kind of way.

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

I don't know about Wiccan because that stuff isn't practiced over here but Satanism is defenitely organized. The Church Of Satan has rules, statements (how Satan is, compared to the bible telling how God is),sins, applications and a founder (Anton Szandor LaVey) too, how the hell are you gonna call that unorganized?

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

I consider most of them organized. I think that when most people think of organized religion, they just think of the most popular ones, and consider the less-popular ones inferior... it's been a long day, I hope that makes some sense.

Just out of curiosity, what do you believe, Daddys_Girl? I know what you said in your first post, but do you think that we're just here and living now, and when we die it's over? Or what?

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

Some religions are organised, in general I wouldn't call Wicca an organised religion except where it is being practised in a proper coven. Satanism (CoS) is certianly an organised religion.

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

I believe in the God(Goddess)...I believe there is a hell...I believe in heaven...I believe we earn our way there...asking for it doesn't get it...I believe in karma...and I believe in kicking the shit out of people who come to my door looking like men in black telling me jesus is coming.

I don't believe there is a right or wrong...I just don't want a priest, preacher, reverend, nun, telling me HOW to believe.

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

If they have a structure and a set of beliefs that everybody follows then sure.. call them organized. So they lack the financial power of some of the mainstream religions but it doesn't make them any less organized, maybe in some cases they are more organized in their hierarchy.. and can police their people a little better (*cough* catholic priests *cough*). Or if they choose not to then form their rules in a way that whatever happens.. is cool?

The only time I listen to any religious yackin is when the Jahovas Witnesses send a HOT chick to my door to "Tell me the word of the lord and open my eyes".

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

to the original post, when your wicca freinds say they don't have any religion, maybe it's because they see it more as a philosophy. The wicca i know start out by rebelling but what they see as organized religion (usually the church) and find the inclusiveness of Wiccan beliefs more appealing.

They might think of themselves as affiliates, people who share the same core beliefs and find insperation and guidence from their writings. It's a question of level of involvement, without enforced doctrine, orthodoxy/clergy, or communal worship, it probably doesn't feel like 'organized religion'

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

If these people celebrate their beliefs with people who have the same ideology, then they are organized, therefore, it is a religion.

I agree with a lot of these replies...I think that you prescribe to a doctrine and its set of rules then you are involved in and "organized" religion...whether it be satanism or wicca or catholicism.

Re: Do you consider offbeat religions organized?

I would have to agree that they are organized but many of them are to lazy to actually follow a specific path so they create their own beliefs and rituals. I worked in a situation where i met a lot of people who live alternative lifestyles, from witches, warklocks, to dominatrix, to elves..yes there are people out there that think they are elves.

Well the funny thing is is the similarity of their beliefs. They all share the basic idea of spirtuality. But the people within one category say witches all had different beliefs but where there is one witch there are many and they follow the same beliefs and rituals. But a group of witches 2000 miles away could have different ways. So it's not organized like say catholics.
