Now that the US handed control of the country back to the people of Iraq what do you think will happen? How do you think things will progress?

Re: So Iraq is sovereign

I don't think being sovereign and having a President necessarily involve elections - but I don't think it can be considered a democracy without a leader elected by the people.

Re: So Iraq is sovereign

But the men currently in power were elected....just not by the people. So technically, if you don't want to call Iraq a democracy, don't call America a democracy either.

As far as the future is concerned, I'd be very surprised if Iraq works out at all. It's up to them. If the radical factions are so consumed with their hatred of the West that they will continue to do the terrible crimes they've commited to civilians, both Western and Iraqi, there was no hope for Iraq in the first place.

I do genuinely hope that Iraq turns out ok, not simply becuase of the enourmous time, effort, and money that all of us as Americans have sacrificed, but because a free Iraq would be the first real major step the West can take towards reconciling a rift with the Islamic world that began with the Crusades.

Re: So Iraq is sovereign

sovereign means having supreme or absolute power

so if the united states has appointed the leaders of iraq, (e.g. Negroponte) how can it be called a sovereignty, as has been stated in various news reports?

Their sovereign, because they dont have to answer to the US. They can and will do whatever they please. It doesnt matter who appointed them, as long as they are independant of any other government above them, they are sovereign.

Re: So Iraq is sovereign

Hypothetically, say Russia had control of us and appointed a President and other Cabinet-like officials to head the U.S. Then they said that we are sovereign, yet their people are in charge and their military are still in your country. How is that sovereignty? Maybe I'm just missing something.

Yeah, like perhaps a chromosome. (rimshot)

Iraqis are in charge of Iraq. It doesn't matter how hey got there. They have power, hence they are sovereign.

I still think a lot of Iraqis are pissed off about this whole war in the first place. It seems to me that the violence will never end because a lot of innocent people have died because of this useless war. If your mother/father/brother/sister or any kind of relative was killed by U.S. troops just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I think you would want to avenge their death. Over 35,000 civilians were killed and there are a lot of people that are pissed off about that, not to mention the prison abuse. Than people have the nerve to say that their just not grateful for what we did; they need to look at the big picture and look at everything that has happened there.
