Baseball Trades - Contender or Pretender?
With the Houston Astros giving up their closer to acquire Carlos Beltran, did their team get better or worse? Are they now the hands down favorite to win the NL Central, or is it too late? Contender or Pretender?
Oakland got Octavio Dotel in the trade. Is this the last piece of the puzzle that they need to be a serious contender? Will they beat out Anaheim or even Texas to win the division? Contender or Pretender?
The Chicago White Sox gave up great prospects to get Freddy Garcia from the Seattle Mariners. This may give them the pitching they need to win the weak AL Central division, but will it be enough for them to advance in the playoffs? Or will they even make the playoffs? Contender or Pretender?

Astros-Pretender, Cubs will win the central. Astros/Cards will go to the wire for the Wild Card
Oakland-Pretender, but a solid Wild Card contender, although I think the Sox will win it.
ChiSox-Contender, will win the Central.

Its time for the Devil Rays to start making a couple of moves. They need to add to their bullpen in a big way.

The Astros giving up Dotel doesn't hurt them at all. They have Brad Lidge to close and the guy is awesome.

After the clubbing the Cardinals just gave the Cubbies, I don't think there'll be much joy in Wrigleyville this October.
Cardinals = Contender
We just need to find a way to get Randy Johnson. Even as it is, I'd gladly stand toe-to-toe with the Yankees (or anyone in the AL) in the Series.
