It depends on the company. Sprint, for example, has a rententions department, which gives arguably the best discounts to current customers. Even new customers don't get the deal that the rententions department gives.

What are you trying to do? If you lost a phone and you have not made it far enough in your contract to be eligible for an upgrade, you're screwed...that's when you find out how expensive cell phones really are. If your contract is up and you are looking for a deal, your carrier should offer you just as many deals as a new customer.

My GF's contract period was over in August...we are changing to a family plan. with the same carrier we both currently have, we are getting two new phones, a $50/phone rebate, a cheaper combined price and some extra features that will keep costs down. Overall, even with a "new" package that requires an initial set up fee, we will get more and save more.

Carriers subsidize the prices of the phone, which is why some phones are "free," and to recoup the cost they lock customers into a contract. Also with certain carriers, when you resign a new contract you get an additional discount on a new phone. Take Verizon Wireless, for instance. With their New Every 2 program, when you finish a contract and you decided to re-sign, you get the new customer price minus and addition $100. Simply put, it depends on the carrier you have, and we all have to pick our poison.
