Video format for DVDs?

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
I am trying to put some video files I have onto dvd and cd video disks. My files are in .avi format and need to be transcoded by the programs when burning. Does anyone know what format its transcoding to? It might be different for DVDs and CD Video disks. Im using Nero for the CD Video and DVDit! for the DVDs. My goal is to try to format all my videos so it dosnt need to be transcoded when I go to make my project. I dont even know if this is possible though. Thanks for any help.

Re: Video format for DVDs?

It's Mpeg2 or Mpeg4. I'm about 75% sure it's Mpeg2. if you have a program that will re-encode it as it writes it, it should be displayed as to what it is encoding it too.

Yeah, I played in high school, and still play during the summer in a community band.

Go to doom9.org all your DVD (backup'ing) needs. :-)
My two favorites: DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

Re: Video format for DVDs?

It works. And yes, you do need the www in front, so www.doom9.org
It is one of the most comprehensive sites in the realm of DVD backup information.

Re: Video format for DVDs?

Video CDs use MPEG-1; SVCDs and DVDs use MPEG-2. Here's a link to convert an AVI file to MPEG to burn as a VCD:

http://vladd44.com/vcd.html

And the http://www.doom9.org link does work for me, too.

Adobe Premiere automatically chooses the settings for you through their Media Exporting plugin. Saves time and effort.
