I'm thinking of buying a new graphics card, quite possibly a NVidia GeForce, not sure though. Any thoughts of what good and cheap out there?

Re: Graphics Card

a little more information would help out ... it depends on what you are going to do with it . for example , if all you want to do is drive your monitor then you wouldn't need to have outputs for a high definition tv ... etc etc . then there is the issue of video sampling ... a whole other realm .
there are some great video cards out here ... with many combinations of inputs/outputs/features ... so many that it can be tough to make a choice !

i personally like the nvida gforce series ... i have tried some other cards and had problems ... but the nvidia stuff is pretty reliable/stable .

Re: Graphics Card

@scatterbrain
It would help to know your budget and your current specs.
If you have a prebuild system like a Dell or HP or whatever, just let which make and model number (eg: HP Pavilion 7955).
Why? Because there is no point in listing cards you can afford much less that can't go in your system.

@CWB
You like the GForce series. Well that narrows it down to everything starting with the GForce2 and up.
That's less than helpful

Re: Graphics Card

i should have been more specific/clearer in my statement ...
my personal track record with the gforce series as a whole (over the long run) has been most satisfactory . in both commercial and home enviroments they offer a lot of bang for the buck as well as a varied line of options .

not to "push" this brand , just a personal observation .

Re: Graphics Card

I bought a Gateway with an Athlon 64 X2 processor. It has 1024 MB DDR and has 250 GB hard drive. It already came with a Geforce 6100 PCI-Express card, but I want a more powerful card mostly for gaming. As for a price, I'm willing to pay no more than $400.

Re: Graphics Card

Then you can easily get a 7800GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814143037
Or a 7600GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rice=&maxPrice=
or even better a 7900GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rice=&maxPrice=

Newegg has 1 7800GTX that is within $400 but not when you include shipping
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rice=&maxPrice=

My personally suggestion, and this is what I would do with a $400 budget.
Get the 7600GT and then spend the rest on more RAM. You want to play FEAR or BF2, that card can handle it...easy, but the RAM needs to be 2GB for those games to like the rig better. Ignore what the box says, go with what someone who knows says.

If your RAM is 2x512MB and you only have 2 slots then that cuts your options down. I can't tell what you have because you didn't get the Gateway model number for me to use to look it up.

Re: Graphics Card

Wolf pretty much summed it up, that 7600 gt is a solid card, most new games now are system hogs so 1-2 gigs of ram is a must. Newegg is a great site, check user reviews to get more info.
