Video Playback

I have a P4 3.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, Win XP SP2 MCE. I normally use IrfanView 3.98 to look at pics and play videos. Since installing it on my new computer, it won't play videos. I installed the full set of plugins and an additional set of codecs. I get an error message suggesting I try more codecs. So I tried playing vids in Media Player, RealPlayer, and Nero's Media Player and ShowTime. Nada, zilch. Pics open, audio files play. No video.

I'm not Super Tech, but I'm not a total noob and I've tried checking everything I can think of -- reinstalling the players, checking for updates, temporarily disabling the firewall, anti-spyware, and anti-virus software, etc, etc -- and I'm out of ideas. WinXP and all the other programmes are fully updated. This problem has been happening for a while, so I don't think it's due to a faulty update as there have been subsequent patches installed, but I'm open to all suggestions.

For what it's worth, there's no video playback on my WinME machine either. The only things it has in common are IrfanView, AVG, and ZoneAlarm.

Any ideas or suggestions will be very welcome. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Re: Video Playback

Have you tried DivxPlayer? They usually are up to date on all the codecs and such. What type of video are you trying to play?

Re: Video Playback

I've tried to playback .avi, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .wmv, and probably some others. IrfanView will only play .avi and I can sometimes get Nero ShowTime to play some of the others, but it usually locks up right at the end of the clip and I have to do the 3-fingered salute to close it.

Re: Video Playback

Do both computers have the same video card? Perhaps you have incorrect video drivers. I would try a different video player and update all your codecs or reinstalling all the video software.

Re: Video Playback

Different cards in each computer. I've tried IrfanView, Windows Media Player, etc and all share the same problem. I installed a new set of codecs, too. I've run full AV and spyware scans, cleaned the Registry, patched everything that has a patch available, and am out of ideas.

Re: Video Playback

i know this would be a bitch, but if you've tried everything else, try uninstalling EVERYTHING that has to do with video, and reinstalling.

Re: Video Playback

Yeah. Take off ZoneAlarm and see if that works. A fresh build would probably work too and slowly add software to see what breaks it. Easier would be keep on uninstalling software until it starts working and once it works, then you know what prevented it.
