Suicide
Maybe its my glowing personality, but it seems that all the girls I know have issues that cause them to have suicidal thoughts in the past. What is a person to do? I can't just leave them be. But I also don't know how to approach the matter. Any thoughts on this or thoughts on suicide in general?

Re: Suicide
are they just admitting to past thoughts or are they still entertaining those thought?
it is a very akward position to be put in if you dont have experience dealing with those types of situations. they may just want someone to talk to. saying those types of things freaks people out (in general) and many would shy away from them because of it. unfortunately, there are some that talk like that just to get attention. if you are uncomfortable talking about these types of things, tell them that in a plain non-judgemental maner and ask them if they have spoken to any professionals about those feelings (doctor, crisis center, priest/rabbi/whatever) you can always offer to go with them too.
if you are uncertain how serious they are, you can always call one of those suicide 800 numbers and talk to someone there about it. they are confidential and you dont have to give out any names. if someone is scaring you with what they are saying and how they are acting, just call the cops. they can get the person to a hospital to be evaluated.

Re: Suicide
If someone approaches you talking about suicide, that person needs help. Im not saying they are a nutjob, or wacko . . im talking real help. There are counselors, phone numbers, professionals . . anyone of those suggestions should be given to that person.
Just a suggestion.

Re: Suicide
I was dating a girl once who's best friend was cutting herself on a daily basis, personaly i don't get it. I near cry when i bang my toe on the end of the sofa or door, last thing i'd want to do is cut and hurt myself on a regular basis.

Re: Suicide
I would run...very very far. Made that mistake once, not making it again.
Now that that's out of the way : leave them be until they ask for help. In movies life gets better when people try to help, but this isn't the movies.

Re: Suicide
cutting is a sign of clinical depression. they need to get to a psychiatrist, who can prescribe some drugs to help them feel better.

Re: Suicide
no thoughts on how to deal with suicide that havent been said already, but i have some experience with suicide. my cousin killed himself when he was 22 about 6 years ago, and it was one of the thoughest things ive ever had to deal with.
also recently, my father left our family, leaving only a note that led us to think he killed himself. he has since returned and weve got him in a lot of therapy.
anyone that seriously considers killing themselves as a solution to any problem really needs to be told that its not a way out, and it sucks a lot for the people they leave behind. its really one of the most selfish things someone can do.

Re: Suicide
Problem with suicide is it is irreversable. Duh. I guess what I mean to say is everyone should be made more aware that people do actually love them in spite of what desperation does. Suicide is not a way to run and hide, it is a cop out.

Re: Suicide
If someone is going to kill themselves then you can't watch them 24/7
You can try and help them by talking to them and being there for them, but apart from that, there isn't much else you can do really.

Re: Suicide
I have a question for those that think suicide is a total cop-out. Say a person has alzheimers. They decide that instead of losing themselves and mcausing great aggrivation and sadness in others due to the illness, is it still a cop-out?
There is no cure for alzheimers and the treatments often help minimally. Also the illness has been known to split apart families. Also my grandmother has it. I see here slipping away and it saddens me. It also causes great distress in my mother.

There was a recent feature on Dateline (I think) regarding this issue. Should doctors advise relatives of terminally ill patients or patients without hope of recovering to pull the plug on them? In the case of people with advanced stages of Alzheimer's Disease, they simply let them starve. Comparatively, starving to death is a much more humane way to go when you take a look at the alternative of dying slowly each day.
I believe that in your case, your grandmother has the right to live out the remaining years of her life. However, while she hasn't slipped deeper into the depths of Alzheimer's Disease, she should consult a doctor along with your family memebers to take a look at your options.

Re: Suicide
My question was not if we should "pull the plug", it was if she comitted suicide, is it a cop-out.

Re: Suicide
If she still has the ability to make the choice, then yeah, it is.
We're all going to die eventually...so why don't we just pull the plug on ourselves now and save us the trouble?
