Guild Wars

anyone play it? I have two friends that swear by it, they're playing it all the time. They tell me I need to, but Im not sure yet. Anyone that played it have any opinion of it? I played Dark Age of Camelot for years, I still play every now and again, I tried WoW and hated it, then played Lineage II for a little bit before I got bored with it, wasn't too impressed with the XP GRIND or the economy system, prices for things were ridiculous, and it took forever to get the money needed to do something simple like port to a city.

I need to make sure I am going to like it before I spend the $50 to buy it and not like it

Some of my mates are playing Guild Wars and are enjoying it.

Others of my mates are playing Eve and are enjoying it.

Me personally - I'm playing WoW and I enjoy it :)

Don't get it.

Play WoW again, you will like it. My roommate had guild wars and played for about 2 days before giving it up. It's not a persistent world like DAoC, more of a central hub with instanced areas like Phantasy Star Online. So if you're out wandering around you will never run into anyone else, I hate games like that, there is no sense of community.

Also there are only something like 20 levels and it takes forever to level up.

Plus it seems like all the guys who come into the store raving about it are total douchebags. You can tell a lot about a game by the people who play it. Normal people actually play WoW.

Just my opinion, but you're a moron if you play it :mstad:

Of course, having friends to play with can make any game great, it's honestly more about that than any other factor. If your buddies are into it and you all can play together then might as well give it a shot, at least you're not stuck with a monthly fee.

Re: Guild Wars

I didn't like WoW because of several reasons. One being the 'cartoonish' aspect the game has. I will give it to them that they have some amazing scenery and stuff, but it was just too much for me. Then the instancing. They introduced instancing to DAoC right after I got back from Iraq, and I fell in love with it. Great place for XP, loot and coin. BUT, unlike WoW, the instancing was level based, so you could go solo an instance and not have any problems. Whereas in WoW, you gotta have a damn group to go to any of the instances because you're gonna get owned by an elite and everything is a much higher level than you. I did sort of like the questing, but it got old when that's all I was doing, spent a lot of time running, riding, and flying. I did like that the loot drops were better at some points, and you could salvage armor that dropped. I played a necro up to like 20 I think, before I quit. Just wasn't for me, really

Re: Guild Wars

You played a necro? Then you weren't playing WoW, cuz there are no necros. Warlock maybe? I played a necro in DAoC back in the day.

The instances are made for groups, that's why they're full of elites. They are the part of the game that forces you to be social. What I do like is that it is entirely possible to solo all the way to 60, you may not run any instances but you can do it. This is the opposite of Everquest where its damn near impossible to solo past a certain level.

Yes the game is "Cartoonish" but that's their art style, its the same they use in all the warcraft games. What I do like about it is that it's not terribly graphic intensive, so even lower-end computers can run WoW whereas they would shit their pants if they even looked at the box EQ2 comes in.

When I played WoW I solo'd a lot, because I find that most people are fucking morons. When I need to run an instance I try and get guildies to go with me or a higher-level friend to run me through. The problem with it being the most popular game in the world is that many of the people have never played MMOs before and with such a high population the idiot quotient skyrockets. You'd probably love it if you played with the right people. If you ever decide to try it again, let me know, I'll hook you up with the server I played on and hell, maybe I'll even reactivate my account. My ex roommate is the co-leader of one of the biggest guilds on the server so finding peeps to play with shouldn't be a problem.

Jesus this was a long post. Let me know how you like Guild Wars. Have you considered just going to one of your friend's houses and playing on their account for a bit to get a feel for it? And don't they have a free trial? Every other game does.

Re: Guild Wars

You're right...it was a warlock, Im used to DAoC, and it's been almost 2 years since I've played WoW...I was working up a necro before I got bored with DAoC this last time...I go through weird spurts with that game. I love the hell out of it, and for some reason one night I'll log in and have a hell of a time.

Right now I have a 50 Friar, 50 Two-Handed Hero, 42 Shield/Chants/Sword Pally, and 32 Sight Necro, as well as a slew of mid-20 toons that I just couldn't get into.../level FTW

I might try some WoW again, don't know...I've thought about it a bit. If I do, I'll let you know.

Re: Guild Wars

Oh man, Warlock. That was my class of choice. But if you are going to go with WoW again, wait till the expansion. A lot of the people that have left the game already (people that had played since launch or close to launch, like myself) are going to be returning. I got tired of the 40 man instances. It's hard enough to get 15-20 smart people let alone 40 that know what to do. Thankfully I don't have to suffer through those anymore and they are bringing back more 5-10 man instances and the 20s.

The PVP will be greatly revamped so you'll be able to get gear that is on par with what you could pull from at least the first couple 40 man instances to make your journey through the new level 60-70 instances a little easier. Not to mention the world PVP and arena stuff.

I'm going to :bump: the shit out of this thread on the special occassion that I just bought the game (the Game of the Year) edition or something of that sort and just started playing. So far it seems to actually be decent. The fact that you don't run into people in the wilderness is actually alright in my books cause I don't have to read a bunch of BS spam. We'll see what I think more about the game after I put a few hours into it. We'll see.
