Worlds most over hyped software releases

Okay lets not just go with games here but also OS's and workstation software and the like. What is the penultimate of crap over hyped software releases?

What software should we not bother to get the real version of because it sucks?

In no particular order here are my favourites for the McCrap basket...

1. MS Me
2. MS XP(without the 300MB + of service packs...)
3. MS /ES AoE III
4. Stronghold entire series

Are there any others who would like to contribute to the list. please let it flourish and grow...

lol do I feel a MS hater within our midst...

Not all microsoft products are bad mate - and I'll stand by that statement. Microsoft has made computing easy for all users. You know most people hate MS purely because any n00b can use a computer these days without understanding how it works or a basic concept behind it. For example - how many people these days would still be running their monitor on the default res etc. But you cannot blame MS for that - sure they could of have forced the user to experiment with the settings of Windows - but they rather opted to give computing to the many instead of for the elite.

What MS tried to do is truely great - they have allowed multiple hardware to be inserted into their boxes without any great difficulty - a novice can plug in a device and bam windows will allow it to run with generic drivers.

For those that want to go for a more techincal attitude they goto Linux. There are even distros of Linux that would be considered n00b. However what the Linux purists don't realise is that not everyone can spend their time configuring their system for a simple application to run. Linux is a 'learn as you go' OS. Surely many of us who have tried to install Linux have realised that yes you need to know quite a few computing terms. Now I give Linux its power over windows - it shits all over windows but for a simple humble user who doesn't want a reality check on how truely ignorant they are to technology they must go for windows.

Now what OS do I use? I mix it up between Linux or Windows depending on the mood I'm in.

So my list is as follows:

1. MS Me - yes that was THE worst software release EVER!
2. HL2 - it was nice but it was just lacking oomph
3. Tomb Raider on PC...I'm sorry the controls just suck.
4. DOOM3. It was nice lookin but got boring really fast.
5. /Insert many game titles here.

Nah, not just MS.
Imagine releasing softwre that needs patching less than a month after it's released?

Yeah like that. Also read on other forums about LEGO Starwars by Eidos not having a support page even though the links come with the CD.
That and the fact that it just will not run on some machines which fall into the right specs. In specific it seems to be the intel based graphics have D3D errors which will not allow the game to run. (I know that the integrated graphics solution is crap, but it's all some people on a budget are able to afford)

Why is it that companies can release defective software and us not be able to return it if it won't work. Fine if it states in plain english on the box it's limitations but many will not define problem hardware till the readme. Which since it's inside a wrapped case and upon removal of said wrapping voids us from being able to return it due to copyright laws. We can't win.

Re: Worlds most over hyped software releases

I think you should consider adding Itunes to that list of software. I am talking about the mac version, I have no experience with the windows one, but from what I hear, it is worse.
It's nice that you can buy mp3's (who does that) right in the interface. But man it's organization of the mp3's sucks. What ever happened to just selecting the music directory you wanna play. Nothing beat the easy to use winamp. Also up until recently requiring the import of music into the mac AAC3 format, and not leaving them as Mp3 tracks... crap.

Then they have come out with more *secure* versions which have just been more memory hungry than before. Then talk about patches. They gave us version 5.0 with security patches that caused windows like crashes on the more than stable Mac OS X. So like 2 days later came out with a new version. Stupid.

It is frustrating that it is the only real music player for the mac os X. But I would much rather deal with that and have a good operating system. That is an OS that stays alive without the often crashes seen on MS systems. I vote to put winblows XP right at the top of the crap list.

Aren't most mainstream games nowdays all mostly dependent on hype and marketing? With the whole console mentality of fast-food entertainment. You pick up a game and start playing without much of a learning-curve, beat it in 20-30 hours and move on to the next game. Easier to make money that way.

There aren't many small-time game publishers around today if you don't count those in Russia and Eastern Europe. And the big boys like their marketing to target clueless parents.
