I have seen in a couple of posts that the bible is argued and debated. I normally will stay 100 miles from this subject but I gotta know I guess...I only have one thing to say...these are opinions...please respect that some people may not believe the same as you...so...Is the bible a rock in stormy waters for you, or just a really long and scary novel?

Re: What is the bible to you?

The Bible is actually a collection of books written through the ages, with different authors/prophets, and with very distinct styles. If you read through the first 3 books, you will find that it is full of sordid tales of treachery, betrayal, prostitution, incest, and much more. It's also very poetic at times. Reading through the Gospels is very indicative of the human condition, and how we can behave at times. It's actually very interesting to read Jesus' sermons, because he has an uncanny knack for describing things we take for granted in very unconventional ways. Gets the brain gears cranking.

I would recommend it as a book for literary reading, at the very least, because so much of our culture has so many references to the stories held within.

In the history of the human race
Of all the inspirations for the separation of man from his true tribal culture
Of all the inspirations for acts of violence from one man onto another,
From one nation onto another, from one oppressor onto the oppressed.
There is no more guilty party and inspiration than those books known
As the holy bible, the Koran and the bagavad gita to spread separation of mankind.

Re: What is the bible to you?

As much as I don't believe in the Bible and religion as a whole, I have to say that anyting that give others hope and a guide to live a good life by can't be all that bad. Religion is a great thing... all kinds of religions until:

1. People start pushing theirs down other people's throats.
2. People start interpreting their religion to say that they need to start killing people.

As long as you keep to yourself and live a good life, I am all for religion... it is just not for me.

"As long as you keep to yourself and live a good life, I am all for religion... it is just not for me." Everyone is religious! When people condemn religion, they are usually refering to an organinized form of it which they don't like.
The Bible is a book of history, poetry, etc. People who dismiss it as best selling "fiction" are simply ignorant of it's background. As for opinions, some are only that, and others are based on fact. It is easy to dismiss anything with a "personal" opinion.

Re: What is the bible to you?

The Bible to me is a book that I personally look to for guidance sometimes and I just read it sometimes to get back in touch with God if I stray to far. Alot of the stories of that time, still carry over to out time and if you read the Bible you can learn lessons and not repeat what happened in the past.

Im all about God, but I don't push other people to be about him too. I figure people will either look for him or not. And I dont think anyone can say "i truely don't belive in God" because whenever you were alone and no one was there to help you, im sure you weren't asking your mom and dad to help you, you needed someone stronger that would give you strength. Maybe not "God" but your version of him.

Just my .02 cents.

Interesting thought, but I would have to disagree. I am not religious. I don't condemn religion, either. There are some aspects of organized religion that I wish could change but for the most part, I think it is a pretty good thing to have in society. If someone decides not to kill me because he thinks he will go to hell if he does, then I am all for religion, ya know?

Expand on this "everyone is religious" argument, Warfrat1... I am curious.

Re: What is the bible to you?

Hmmm, I think that everyone has a worldview, which you could call a 'religion.' If you're an atheist, you live your life worshipping yourself. If you're Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc, you worship something else.

Dont we all have idols in our life, be it romance, money, or material possessions?

The bible was written by humans, humans lie. Every single human on the face of the planet lies, and if you say you don't lie, then you are lying. I am not saying that everyone out right lies... but everyone stretches the truth, holds back little parts of a story, or a combination of the two.

I do it everyday, I'm not going to lie. I don't do it where things really matter, such as relationships and what not. But if I am telling a story to a friend... i didnt have 4 beers... i really only had 2... but the thing was so dumb that i did... i had to be a little more intoxicated than i really was to save face.

Of course someone is going to respond... no no i don't do that... but everyone else who reads that knows you are lying lol.... every human lies... its sad. Your mom lies, your grandma lies, your preacher lies... everyone does.

So, that is why I think the bible is fiction. It was written by man. You can not argue the fact that it was written by man. Man experience the world, and wrote it down as he saw it. Take 50 people, have them witness the exact same event, and have them write a story depicting what happened during the event. The personal feelings and biases of the people in the study will effect the outcome, and every story will be different. And the fact that every human lies in one way or another countless times throughout their life by strecthing this or shrinking that, makes the bible fiction.

Ok maybe its not entirely fiction... we can say that it's based on true stories... although that is still a stretch for me. I dont see how jonah could get eaten by a whale... and survive. I haven't heard anything about anyone else getting swallowed by a whale and surviving throughout the past 2,000 some odd years (and don't try to flame my timeframe, i really don't care)

Fact is, the last autobiography you read was based on fact, it was not fact. So, besides a starter log for a fire, I would have to say that the bible to me is still a fictional novel. But it, along with religion in general, was the best idea created by man, to control and strike fear into man.

Re: What is the bible to you?

The Bible is a prophetic message full of secret truths. It can be understood on many different levels. There are certain keys to unlock the information held therein. It is designed this way to test the heart of those that wish to discover the truth.
Unfortunately it has been used by some for purposes other than what it was designed for.

Re: What is the bible to you?

My biggest beef with the Bible is what are you supposed to take as literal (the history behind it) and what is figurative (everything else).

For instance, evolution has disproved Adam and Eve. It is also impossible to fit two of every animal on a boat and then distribute the animals back all over the world. So, what can you take as history, and what can you take as fiction?
