Actually, we were suppose to be 20 miles off the coast not that it matters. Being an AV Fuels specialist I spent most of my time working around live running aircraft and my ship board time was spent on the fight deck fuel crew. Without speaking of my own experiences, you can note that the flight deck crew gets the same Hazardous duty pay as people in combat. We were paid double for serving in Vietnam War zone. Now I wouldn't say the potential danger on the fight deck doesn't have better odds then being under fire in combat. But unless you've been there working on the flight deck in pitch dark during monsoon rains after the landing lights are turned off should anyone call it a picnic. Sure they'd pull out of it while the planes landed but it wasn't long enough for your shorts to dry out. |
